HIGH POINT, N.C. – Georgia State's volleyball team completed a double-header sweep on Friday at the HPU Classic in High Point, N.C., beating both Loyola (Md.) and South Carolina State 3-0 to pick up the team's first two wins of the 2015 season.
“Today was exactly what we want from our team,” head coach Sally Polhamus said. “We were well-rounded and different people stepped up in each situation. Our offense was diverse, our outsides executed well and our middles were solid throughout the day.”
Georgia State faced Loyola at 12:30 and won 25-19, 25-14, 25-19. Senior Deidra Bohannon and junior Kristina Stinson led the way for the Panther offense. Bohannon was solid all-around, recording 10 digs and eight kills while hitting .389. Stinson led the team in kills with 16 on a .281 hitting percentage. Bohannon also added three aces.
In the second match, a 7 p.m. nightcap against South Carolina State, the Panthers once again emerged victorious, winning 25-21, 25-17, 25-18. Senior Kitan Ajanaku, who hit .583 with seven kills in the first match, had another strong showing with six kills and three blocks. Freshman Shae Chapman played well in her GSU debut, hitting .400 with a pair of kills and a pair of digs. Aces were the name of the game for the Panthers as the team finished with 11. Sophomore Sydney Mauer had five while Stinson earned four to go along with her 15 kills.
Georgia State wraps up the HPU Classic Saturday at 4 p.m. against High Point. Polhamus noted the fast-paced system that HPU runs and stressed that GSU needed to play a disciplined match.
GSU returns to host Kennesaw State Tuesday, Sept. 8 for the Panthers' home opener. That match is slated for 6 p.m. in the GSU Sports Arena.
