ATLANTA -- Georgia State fell to Texas State 12-2 Friday at the GSU Baseball Complex in the opening game of their Sun Belt Conference series.

After losing their fourth straight game, the Panthers (26-19, 13-7 Sun Belt) fell out of first place in the Sun Belt Conference for the first time since March 28. GSU now trails South Alabama (15-9).

Texas State (5-5) starter Lucas Humpal, the Preaseason Pitcher of the Year in the conference, was outstanding, allowing one run on seven hits over 7.1 innings. He struck out seven and walked none.

The only run Humpal allowed was a solo home run by Caden Bailey, who hit his second homer in three games and third of the season.

Will Johnson added an RBI-single for the Panthers.

Nathan Bates (4-2) took the loss for GSU, allowing seven runs on eight hits over five innings.

"The whole thing just didn't go our way tonight, and I'm extremely disappointed," head coach Greg Frady said. "As a first-place team, you expect a lot more than that on Friday night, and I'm extremely disappointed. You can make every excuse in the world, from injuries to finals, but if you're going to be a first-place team, you fight through it. We didn't get that done tonight. What do you do now, you show up up tomorrow and fight back with some toughness."

Game 2 of the series is scheduled for Saturday at 2 p.m.
