Panthers Fall at UAB 64-57

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.-On a night when both teams shot under 40 percent from the floor, Georgia State fell to UAB Tuesday at Bartow Arena.

Jeremy Hollowell led the Panthers with 15 points and seven rebounds before fouling out with just under four minutes to play. Senior Markus Crider came off the bench to add 12 points and five rebounds, while senior Kevin Ware added 11 points and five rebounds.

Georgia State (3-2) lost for just the 15th time in the last 65 games dating back to Dec. 14, 2014. UAB (4-3) won its 12th-straight game at home, ranking among the top 20 home court winning streaks in the country.

The Blazers were led by Chris Cokley who finished with a double-double of 10 points and 15 rebounds. Nick Norton added 16 points, knocking down 4-of-7 from 3-point range for UAB.

The game was a match-up of two No. 14-seeds from last year's NCAA tournament that each shocked No. 3 seeds on the opening day of the tournament. The game also marked the first of four for the Panthers this month against schools from Conference USA. The Panthers are 4-4 against the league in the last two-plus seasons.

Both teams shot 37 percent from the floor with the Panthers hitting just 3-of-13 from 3-point range, while the Blazers made 6-of-20. The difference in the game was at the free throw line with UAB making 22-of-29, while Georgia State went 10-of-18.

After both teams starting out shooting well from the floor, UAB took an early 26-14 lead with 9:13 to play in the first half, knocking down a trio of 3-pointers.

The Panthers responded with a 9-0 run to cut the deficit to just three points, 26-23, with 4:31 to play in the first 20 minutes before going into the locker room trailing 34-26.

UAB jumped out to a quick 42-28 lead with 16:57 to play in the game before Georgia State responded with a 10-0 run to cut the deficit to four, 42-38, with 13:36 to play.

The Panthers cut the deficit to two, 45-43, on a put-back by Crider with 9:42 remaining. Following a UAB run which put the Blazers back ahead 53-43, the Panthers made one more run and cut the deficit to just three points on a 3-point by freshman Malik Benlevi with 1:23 to play.

Benlevi made his first career start, finishing with five points. Sophomore Jordan Session added six points off the bench while also pulling down six rebounds.

Georgia State will next travel to Wright State in Ohio on Friday for a 7:30 p.m. ET game. It will be a homecoming for senior Markus Crider, redshirt-freshman Jeff Thomas and head coach Ron Hunter who all hail from the Buckeye State.
