Zachary Sets Career High But Panthers Fall In Five to UALR

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – For the second match in a row, the Georgia State volleyball team went to five sets, and unfortunately, for the second match in a row, the Panthers came a few points short of earning the W.

The Panthers lost 3-2 to UALR Sunday afternoon, dropping to 5-11 on the season and 0-2 in the Sun Belt. UALR (10-4, 2-0) has now won its last eight matches. On Friday night, GSU lost 3-2 to Arkansas State in Jonesboro, Ark.

Georgia State won the first two sets, 25-20 and 25-22. However, UALR came back to win the next two 25-16, 25-21. In the fifth set, UALR used its momentum and took the final set 15-12.

"I'm very proud of how our team competed today and this weekend," head coach Tami Audia said. "I feel like we are doing good things and we're coming along as a team. We just need to put things together consistently.

"UALR and Arkansas State are good teams, and it just shows us we have to play every single point every single night. We are so close now and we are going to get there."

Sophomore Eliza Zachary set a career high with 21 kills in the five-set effort. Zachary hit .516, having only five errors in 31 attempts. She also had one assist, one service ace and two digs.

Sophomore Dede Bohannon had 11 kills, while junior Andrea' Ezell and freshman Molly Shonk each had eight. Ezell also had a strong defensive game, picking up two solo block and six block assists. Junior Natalia Nieto had 33 assists in addition to her 12 digs and one kill. Senior Emily Averbeck had three service aces.

Overall, UALR outhit the Panthers .259 to .232. The Trojans had two players with more than 20 kills, Edina Begic with 23 and Sonja Milanovic with 22.

After five straight matches on the road, the Panthers return home for three matches in five days. On Wednesday, GSU will have its conference home opener at 6 p.m. against Western Kentucky. On Friday, the Panthers will host UT Arlington at 6 p.m. as well, followed by Texas State at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
