GEORGIA STATE HEAD COACH TRENT MILES:
“Tough for our young men. As I told them, this is not about fighting and competing. It's about execution. Our kids were pounding away. I told them in there that they should be disappointed, which they are, but they should be proud of themselves because we keep pounding at that rock. And we don't know when that rock is gonna break, but we're going to shatter it pretty soon. And we're getting closer and closer. We're knocking chips off that rock to break totally, and we almost saw the result today.
"Our young men, with the exception of just a few plays in the game, gave ourselves a chance to win that game at the end. And I felt so bad for them because it didn't happen. And they're devastated, but at the same time they're committed to understanding what it takes and continue to keep working and pounding that rock every day until it breaks. And we almost got it done.
"My hats off to Jacksonville State and their program. They deserved the victory. Great job on their part, but my heart goes out for our young men because we very easily could have come with a better result, and you know they fought, fought, fought, fought, fought. Down 14 in the fourth, we found a way you know. But it was our job as coaches to lead them and get them going to when they can get their victory. I can tell you that it's getting really really close. Our young men are going to win games. I saw a team today that again, I keep going back to it, but we had a saying a while ago. I kept the signs. I'm going to have signs made up that say, you know, just pound the rock. And our kids just kept that sledgehammer going today. They just kept that focus to keep going and keep pushing forward. 14 down, keep pushing forward, and they did. And it almost got to where we could have got a victory so... We will, and we have more resolve than ever. I'm telling you that it's going to happen. And our young men deserve it, and we'll keep pushing them for it. And we are going to be patient and just keep working at things we know that are right. Which is everything that they're doing and we're doing.”
On team's future:
“Being a competitor, and please don't take this as an arrogance, I know what's going to happen here at Georgia State. So I have no doubts. I'm not worried. I can walk out of here with my head up, with my chin up, my chest out knowing that I've got a bunch of kids that believe in what we're doing. And I can see the improvement. Haven't seen the end result we want yet, but I can see it. And I'm very proud of them. And I know what's going to happen. Again, please don't take that as I'm some arrogant guy coming in here and telling you because I just know. I know because I've been told. I know what they're going to end up doing. I know exactly what's going to happen, and I'm very excited. I'm very thrilled, and it's a privilege to coach these young men and work with my administration and represent Georgia State. It's going to be OK. It's going to be OK. It's just trying to convince them that by Monday so we can get ready for Alabama.”
BRENT McCLENDON
On his interception:
“Trying to make a play and do what's best for the team. I was able to make the play and I am thankful for it”.
"It hurts so much because we were so close and we wanted it so bad. We give all the credit to Jacksonville State. They made the plays when the had to, and we made the plays when we had to. They just made the last play. We know we should have won. We can't take anything away from Jacksonville State.
On the shift and momentum during the second half:
"The momentum came our way on the punt block and the fumble which helped us out tremendously. That boosted our team's self-esteem. The momentum definitely swung our way for a little bit, but we had to keep it. Enough was enough. We had to stop the bad things going on and start making good things happen.
THEO AGNEW
“It was a tough one, but we went after it. It was a little rocky at first and we went in at halftime and brought it. We had been working on doing that for a while. We did some things right and we did some things wrong, but we fell short. “
On the defense:
“The same stuff we practice and we just really had to execute. Where there were holes, Jacksonville capitalized on them, especially with a team like Jacksonville State. I feel like we played well, but we didn't play good enough.”.
“That's what we have been trying to get to. We are seeing differences in ourselves now. We are really tryint to take it to the next level. A loss is a loss. There are no moral victories here. There are still things we need to improve on. I saw some bright spots but also some dark spots because we lost. Overtime or not, we need to realize that certain things are not acceptable. We are going to go back to the drawing board, fix things up a bit, get ready during this bye week, and get tuned up for this next game.”
“I believe in Coach Miles philosophy. We are coming closer and closer to our goal. We are responding in times of adversity. This team with these coaches and this program and attitude we will be a force to be reckoned with.”
JACKSONVILLE STATE HEAD COACH BILL CLARK
“I am proud of our guys. Once again, we had a chance to duck our heads on two problems and give those guys credit they made two plays on special teams on us. I thought we found our identity offensively and in the grand scheme of things we played really well on defense.”
On being 4-0:
“It is just a great feeling, I am so happy for these guys. They found a way and persevered. We demand so much out of them in every way you can and sometimes you worry are we asking too much out of them? But I think they responded and I think that shows up in these close games.”
Georgia State's TD on first play of the game:
“We were so mad. We had the wrong personnel group in the game, which we still should not have given up an out and up pass. We should have had a safety up top but we didn't. We misidentified it and it is just frustrating. We talk about don't give up big plays, make them work it. But we did come back.”
NOTING GEORGIA STATE
