PANTHERSVILLE, Ga. — Lauren Coleman hit a homer in the first game and a hit a two-run double in game two as Georgia State swept both sides of a doubleheader against Samford 3-1 and 6-2 at the Heck Softball Complex on Thursday afternoon.
With a walk in each of the games, Coleman now has 41 walks of the season, which is only two away from a single-season school record of 43 set in 2007 by Danielle Roddy.
Game One: GSU 3, Samford 1
Whitney Phillips had two hits and two RBI as the Panthers took the first game by a score of 3-1.
With two on and two out in the bottom of the second inning, Phillips ripped a double down the left field line to score a pair of runs and give GSU a lead that they would not relinquish.
Coleman hit her fourth home run of the season, a solo home run in the sixth, that provided the remainder of the scoring for Georgia State.
Callie Brister hit a solo home run in the first inning to give Samford an early lead. The Bulldogs threatened to score again in the second after a two-out single with a runner on second, but Clifton threw out the runner at the plate to end the inning.
After giving up three hits in the first two innings, Katie Worley settled in and did not allow another Bulldog hit in the game. The freshman earned her 11th win of the season in her eighth complete game and did not allow a walk.
Game Two: GSU 6, Samford 4
The Panthers scored three runs in both the first and second innings to cruise past Samford in the second game of the doubleheader. After opening a comfortable lead, the Panthers used mass substitutions to get every position player on the roster playing time.
In the first inning, Coleman delivered a two-run double and Jordan Brown followed with an RBI single to score Coleman. During the second, Ashley Christy, Brenna Morrissey and Callie Alford each came through with run-scoring singles.
After allowing a second inning home run, Kaitlyn Medlam retired 13 consecutive Bulldog batters before allowing another solo home run in the sixth inning. The junior pitched 6.1 innings allowed four runs on five hits, but struck out four batters and did not allow a walk.
Abby Adams and Madeline Baker hit solo home runs in the second and sixth innings respectively for the Bulldogs. Samford then scored two runs in the top of the seventh to make the game close, but Worley came in to shut the door and earn her second save of the year.
Georgia State travels to Philadelphia, Pa. to take on the Drexel Dragons in a three-game CAA series this weekend, April 20-21.
