Home Runs Power Softball To a Split at Hofstra

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. — A combined eight home runs provided nearly all of the offense between Georgia State and Hofstra during a doubleheader split on the first day of the two teams' final CAA series at the Hofstra Softball Field on Friday afternoon.

The Panthers (21-10, 4-1) hit three in the first game and one in the second, while the Pride (17-9, 3-1) hit one in the first game and three in the second.

The split snaps winning streak for both teams — Hofstra saw their 13-game streak come to a halt, while GSU's streak was stopped at six games. Georgia State has now won nine of its last 11 contests. Hofstra had not lost a conference game since 2011.

Game One: GSU 3, Hofstra 2

Taylor Anderson hit two solo home runs and Callie Alford provided another one-run homer to help Georgia State snap Hofstra's 13-game winning streak with a 3-2 series-opening victory.

Katie Worley (9-5) earned her ninth win of the season after pitching 5.0 strong innings. The freshman allowed only two runs and no walks, while also striking out three batters. Kaitlyn Medlam threw two scoreless innings of relief to earn the save.

Anderson and Alford both hit home runs in the fourth inning for GSU. Hofstra answered with a run in the bottom of the fourth. Anderson then struck for her second homer of the game in the sixth inning.

Georgia State was actually outhit 4 to 8 in the contest, but Worley managed to strand eight Pride runners on the basepaths.

The last time the Panthers defeated Hofstra in Hempstead was during the 2011 season when GSU won back-to-back games to capture the CAA Championship. GSU had not won a regular season game at Hofstra's home field since 2009.

Game Two: Hofstra 7, GSU 1

Hofstra slugged three two-run home runs to earn the victory, 7-1. The blasts came in the first, fourth and fifth innings. The Pride was also able to score an unearned run in the second inning.

Ashley Christy hit a solo home run in the second inning to provide the lone run for Georgia State.

Hofstra outhit the Panthers 8 to 3 in the contest. Alford and Lauren Coleman both hit singles for GSU.

All-American Olivia Galati threw her second complete game of the day to earn her 16th win of the season. The senior struck out 10 Panthers en route to the victory. Galati pitched all 14 innings of the doubleheader, while GSU used three pitchers.

Kaitlyn Medlam (10-4) suffered the loss for Georgia State after allowing five runs on six hits. Eron Milton pitched 3.0 innings of relief and gave up another two runs to the Pride offense.

Georgia State and Hofstra will play the rubber-match of the CAA series on Saturday at noon.
