ATLANTA — For the 37th time since its founding in 1973, the Georgia State cross country teams will host the GSU Invite on Saturday, Sept. 8 at Nash Farm Battlefield in Hampton, Ga.

The women's 4K race is scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m., with the men's 6K to follow shortly after. A brief awards ceremony recognizing the top teams and individuals will be held at approximately 11:00.

Besides the Panthers, schools represented at the meet will include Clayton State, Emory, Oglethorpe and SCAD Atlanta.

This marks the third year that the historic civil war battlefield in Henry County has been the site of the meet since first hosting the GSU Invite in 2010. Previous to the move, the invitational was primarily run on the campus of Georgia Regional Hospital in Panthersville.

During the past two seasons, the women's race at the GSU Invite was won by a Panther freshman. In 2010, Anna Sinclair captured the individual honor, while Hannah Stefanoff took first place last season.

In 2011, the GSU women's team finished second at the meet behind Georgia. The Panther men finished fourth in a field of 10 teams. Valentin Poncelet was the team's top competitor, finishing the 8K in fifth place.

Georgia State cross country kicked off the 2012 season with a trip to Clemson, S.C. for the Clemson Invite. Both teams finished second behind the host Tigers, but senior Katharine Showalter did win the women's 5K race in 18:33.

For her efforts, Showalter was named the Sun Belt women's cross country runner of the week. GSU earned six such honors last season in the CAA.
