Six Individual Victories for Track in Birmingham

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Six individuals and one relay team took home first place finishes for the Georgia State track and field teams at the Southern Invitational March 9-10 to kick off the 2012 outdoor season.

Charlesha Lightbourne (400m), Leah Norman (400m hurdles), Katharine Showalter (3,000m steeplechase), Gabby Brooks (Long jump) and Mia Adams (Triple jump) and the 4x400m relay team earned victories in their respective events for the GSU women, while Valentin Poncelet (5,000m) won on the men's side.

Seven additional individuals placed second in their events. Wande Brewer (200m), Niamh Kearney (1,500m), Jennifer Rubel (5,000m), Tamara Moore (100m hurdles) were runners up for the women and Chris Harper (800m) finished second for the men.

Overall, the Panthers had 36 top 10 finishes in 17 events, including four of the top 10 spots in the women's 1,500m race. The women also took three of the first four in the 400m.

The women performed well in the field events, taking first, second and fourth in the long jump and first and fourth in the triple jump.

For the throwers, freshman Caressa Reeves placed third in the shot put and eighth in the discuss, while Sydney Henry finished fourth in the shot put and Kesean Henderson was eighth in the hammer throw.

Hosted by Birmingham Southern at Panther Stadium, the meet ran Friday afternoon and all day Saturday. Although this was the first meet of the outdoor season, the Panthers ran three meets during the indoor season in Birmingham at the nearby Birmingham CrossPlex facility.

Next up for the GSU track and field teams is the Georgia Intercollegiate meet held in Atlanta, which will take place from March 16-17.
