TOP 25 GAMES/COMPETITION OF 2010-11

1. Inaugural Football Game, Sept. 2 - 30,237 at Georgia Dome (GSU 41, Shorter 7). In the 98th year of Georgia State, the first football game was played. More fans attended our game than at the Braves-Mets that same night. A Who's Who of Atlanta was at the game, joining the students, faculty, staff and alumni in enjoying the historic moment.

2. Softball Championship Day - Friday, May 13 - In the championship game of the CAA Tournament, GSU defeated host Hofstra, 2-0, to advance to the NCAA Tournament for the second time in school history (1994). Lauren Jones hit the game-deciding single with two outs in the bottom of the sixth and Alana Thomas pitched the three-hit shutout of the 40-win Hofstra Pride. Earlier that day in a must-win game, GSU defeated Hofstra, 4-2, with a Lauren Jones three-run home run in the sixth sparked the rally with the go-ahead hit to score Jessica Clifton. That win ended a Hofstra 30-game home win streak, the longest in the country, and ended a seven-game losing streak to perennial first-place Hofstra.

3. Track Championship Day - May 8 - The women's track team came from behind to win the school's first-ever track championship, winning seven events and setting school records all day long. Their 133 points ended up destroying the closest challenger by 28 points. Yolanda Berryhill was the Most Outstanding Field Performer after winning the discus and shot put. Angelia Nugent was a two-time champ in the long and triple jumps.

4. Baseball Extra-Winning Win Earns CAA Tournament Bid - May 21 - It took an extra inning in a win or go home game for GSU in the final game of the regular season, but the Panthers responded for a dramatic 2-1 win over George Mason. Shane Hammond scored the game-winning run on a single by Brandon Williams to send GSU to its third straight CAA four-team tournament. GSU trailed 1-0 until the Panthers scored in the eighth to tie the game and then went on to win it in the bottom of the 10th inning.

5. Women's Soccer Earns First CAA Tournament Bid - Oct. 31 - In the final regular season game of the season, with a 1-0 win over UNC Wilmington, as both teams played for a win and you're in spot in the four-team CAA Tournament. On Senior Day in Panthersville, GSU's Sarah Bennett ended 80 minutes of 0-0 play with a goal and the defense continued its stellar play for the win and first-ever CAA tournament slot in school history.

6. Softball's 12-inning CAA Tournament win - May 11 - Number two seed GSU and number three seed Towson battled through the longest game in CAA tournament history. In the fifth inning of a scoreless duel, Towson scored first. Meanwhile, GSU didn't even have a hit until the bottom of the fifth when Emily Whitaker got the first single off Towson's ace. Down 1-0 in the seventh and final inning, GSU rallied to tie when Audrey Mason scampered home on a Chelsea Sparks single. The teams played four scoreless innings before Towson scored in the top of the 12th on a home run and were leaving up to their ace pitcher to finish her 12th inning and add to her nine strikeouts. Audrey Mason's walk gave GSU the tying base runner, but with two outs it was up to Whitaker to keep the rally alive. Whitaker not only did that, she ended the game with her first-ever home run to give GSU a 2-1 win and send them on to round two and a winner's bracket game.

7. Women's Tennis' Upset Win To Advance to the Championship -April 23 - Facing No. 35 ranked VCU and the No. 2 seed in the CAA Tournament, the No. 3 seeded Panthers came from behind to shock the Rams and win the semifinal match, 4-2, propelling them on to the championship match. GSU did it the hard way when they lost the doubles point to the veteran VCU team. That meant GSU would have to win four of the six singles matches. Katerina Gresova, Maryna Kozachenko, Abigail Tere-Apisah and Kir Kemp all won and GSU had its upset and a berth in the championship match.

8. Women's Golf Battles On Championship Day - April 23 - In second place as a team and with a pair of individuals in the top 10, GSU had visions of the NCAA on their minds. The team battled for the title, but couldn't overcome UNC Wilmington to finish as proud runner-up in the CAA Championship. Individually, junior Charlotte Guilleux stole the spotlight with her gallop to the CAA Medalist Trophy. Guilleux was two strokes behind the leader and tied with four others for second place heading into the final round. She made a birdie on the 11th hole to move into the lead and fired an even par 72, the lowest score by any golfer of any team in the three-day event.

9. Men's Basketball Defeats Final Four VCU - Who knew on Jan. 3 that VCU was heading to the Final Four and becoming the story of the NCAA season? GSU led at the half, 34-30, and rolled on to an impressive 76-66 win over the 9-4 Rams of Coach Shaka Smart. It marked GSU's first win in 13 tries in the CAA against VCU. Six-foot-10 Eric Buckner was one of the stars of the night with his unstoppable 12-of-16 shooting for 28 points, nine rebounds and three blocks in 30 minutes of play. The Panthers shot 53 percent in the second half and 51 percent for the game against VCU's swarming defense. GSU's defense held the Rams to just 33 percent. The Panthers dominated inside with a 43-25 rebound advantage.

10. Baseball Beats No. 23 Georgia Tech - March 2 - Mark Micowski hit a lead-off home run to start the Panthers off to a 6-3 win at Georgia Tech, then ranked No. 23 in the national poll. GSU improved to 8-1 with Aidan Francis pitching seven innings and Jake Dyer finishing the final two as the pair struck out nine Yellow Jackets on the evening. This was the third time in five years GSU won at cross-town foe Tech.

11. The Biggest Stage Ever - Thursday, Nov. 18 - Georgia State's inaugural football team took center stage across America when they traveled to No. 10-ranked and defending national champion Alabama for a nationally televised game on ESPN2. A stadium full of 101,821 fans and 811,300 homes (well more than a million viewers) watched the NCAA newest teams face one the oldest and most known. GSU's moment in the sun was a second-quarter 97-yard KOR TD by Albert Wilson against the Crimson Tide, who had allowed only a long of 37 yards before his return. The national broadcasting crew of Chris Fowler, Kirk Herbstreit, Desmond Howard and Erin Andrews were kind to the Panthers in the 63-7 game.

12. Men's Tennis Takes Out CAA Champs - March 20 - On the road against 12-2 UNC Wilmington, No. 63 nationally ranked and on their way to the CAA Championship, GSU stepped up to claim a 4-3 upset. The Panthers' surprise shocked the Seahawks, who had taken the doubles point and two singles matches, needing just one more singles win to close out the win. But, GSU would never allow them to do that and won in the final match when No. 4 player Juan Pablo Gutierrez outlasted his foe in a 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 win to give the visiting Panthers the 4-3 win.

13. Softball Competes In NCAA Tournament - May 20-21 - Playing before the biggest crowd in GSU softball history (915 fans), the Panthers had to face No. 6 nationally ranked Georgia on the Bulldogs' home field. GSU dropped an 8-0 decision and then battled the ACC champion Florida State Seminoles before losing 6-1 on the second-day of the NCAA Regionals. Lauren Jones closed out her career with a school-record 32nd career home run.

14. Women's Soccer Knocks Off CAA Champs - Oct. 8 - GSU pulled off a dramatic 2-1 upset of eventual CAA Champ and NCAA bound James Madison in Panthersville. Stephanie Cuccia put GSU ahead in the first half and GSU's defense tried to hold off the Dukes. But, in the closing two minutes, JMU got the equalizing goal. That set up one of the best goal saves in GSU history when Kellianne Collins stopped a JMU penalty kick with 16 seconds to send the match in OT. Five minutes into the overtime, the aggressive Panthers got the game-winning goal when Erin Hill's assist set up Sarah Bennett's game winning goal. James Madison went on to the NCAA Tournament, beating Texas in the first round, before losing to No. 3 North Carolina. This win also turned out to be the 100th for Coach Martelli here at GSU.

15. Men's Soccer Beats Old Dominion - Oct. 20 - GSU had never beaten Old Dominion before in men's soccer, so the odds weren't in their favor. ODU went on to earn an NCAA bid and knock off defending national champion Virginia in their opening round game before bowing to Penn State in the second round. On this night in Panthersville, it was GSU who would not be denied. The match was tied 2-2 when GSU made its improbable move. Senior Joey Syfert, playing basically on one leg with a knee injury hobbling him and limiting his speed and playing, kicked in the go-ahead goal in the 77th minute. It was Syfert's lone goal of the year. Just 88 seconds later, Evan Scott put the ball in the net again for GSU to make it 4-2. ODU rallied to score one more, but GSU claimed the thrilling 4-3 win.

16. No, No, No. - March 27 - In the CAA opening series at Towson in Baltimore, GSU pitcher McCall Langford hurled a no-hitter in Sunday's 3-0 win. The sophomore southpaw was one out away from a perfect game when she walked a batter with two outs in the seventh. Langford struck out the next batter and the no-hitter was in the books. Langford was so dominate on this day that the first batter lofted a lazy fly ball to the outfield and no other batter would then get a ball out of the infield. It marked the first GSU no-hitter since 2008. Towson and GSU would then meet twice more in the CAA Tournament.

17. Women's Basketball Wins CAA Tournament Opener - March 11- GSU won a CAA Tournament game for only the second time in school history and the first time since 2006 when the No. 9 seeded Panthers defeated the No. 8 seeded George Mason Patriots, 68-64, in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. GSU took a 38-26 lead into the halftime break and hung on to move to the second round against No. 1 seed James Madison, the eventual CAA champs. The win showed how much progress the team had made under first-year coach Sharon Baldwin-Tener as George Mason had crushed GSU, 71-47, in the CAA opening game in January.

18. Men's Basketball Wins CAA Tournament Opener - March 4 -GSU stayed focused and came up with a 58-52 win in the opening game of the CAA Tournament in Richmond. Under interim head coach Paul Graham, GSU played hard as its defense shone by holding UNC Wilmington to 29.5% shooting and by blocking eight shots. The two teams had split during the regular season, each winning at home. GSU advanced to the next round against No. 25 nationally ranked and NCAA bound George Mason.

19. A Blast in Harrisonburg - April 10 - The Panthers baseball team had never won a season series against James Madison and had won just three of 18 total games against the Dukes. But, that changed on Sunday, April 10. Down 6-5 heading into the ninth inning, GSU stepped up. Three Panthers got on base and JMU had to pitch to Panther Rob Lind, who had homered earlier in the game. Lind, a lefthanded batter, drove a pitch over the left center field wall for a grand slam blast that gave GSU a 9-6 lead. That gave GSU their series win over the Dukes after GSU's 16-3 win on Saturday. JMU, the nation's highest-scoring team, went on to win the CAA and advance to the NCAA Tournament.

20. It doesn't happen often, a 500th win - Jan. 9 - The women's basketball team won for the 500th time in school history with an 84-71 win over Hofstra. The first GSU win came in 1975-76 over Georgia Tech in Atlanta and this one came against a GSU rival coached by an Atlanta native. The women's basketball team later played the 1,000th all-time game in school history on Feb. 27 in Boston against Northeastern, a 57-44 GSU win. Both game balls are in the GSU trophy cases in the lobby. In the win over Hofstra, Chan Harris and Angelique Burtts both had double-double performances in the convincing GSU win over the team ranked No. 17 in that week's Mid-Major national poll.

21. A Tournament Title - Dec. 29-30 - The men's basketball team brought home the Dr Pepper Classic Tournament championship trophy with a pair of wins in Chattanooga. The Panthers made nine three-point baskets in thrashing Texas A&M Corpus Christi, 72-42, and then 10 three-pointers in the 81-76 win over Chattanooga on the Mocs' home court. Dante Curry got the MVP trophy after 18 points in game one and 21 points in game two. The 42-point yield to TAMCC was the fourth-lowest total allowed in school history.

22. The Bigger They Are, The Harder They Fall - Oct. 1 - Down 2-0, host GSU rallied for a 3-2 win over first-place Delaware in a CAA match. The win was the lone setback for Delaware during the CAA season (13-1, 26-6) as that team earned the NCAA tournament bid. The dramatic comeback featured a day of 22 ties and 10 lead changes. GSU scored seven of the final 10 points to win the fourth set and broke from a 9-9 tie in the fifth and deciding set with four straight points to knock off the first-place team.

23. Back, back, back, back - April 9 - ESPN's Chris Berman's home run call would have gotten a work out in GSU's win in Philadelphia over Drexel. The visiting Panthers broke open a 3-1 game with four home runs in five at bats in the top of the seventh inning. Chelsea Sparks hit one over the fence, followed by a Jessica Clifton blast out of the park. GSU made an out, but then Lauren Jones crushed one out over the fence and Paige Nowacki stepped to the plate and sent her shot back, back, back, back. That is believed to be the first time in GSU history to have four home runs in five at bats.

24. First TV, First OT - Sept. 18 - GSU played host to No. 5 FCS ranked Jacksonville State before the Comcast TV cameras that would send the game to 12 states throughout the southeast. JSU had opened the year with a win over Ole Miss from the SEC. GSU's debut proved memorable and worth watching as the Panthers and Gamecocks dueled into OT, tied at 27-27. In the overtime, JSU scored to make it 34-27. GSU then marched to the two-yard line and on fourth down Kelton Hill's pass to Arthur Williams was first ruled a TD and then changed when a referee spotted a foot out of bounds and overruled. The teams combined for 789 yards and the 61 points in the exciting match-up in front of 16,128. GSU had TD runs on a 41-yard reverse by Darren McCray and a 46-yard sprint by Travis Evans.

25. Women's Basketball Knocks Team Out Of First - Feb. 6 - UNC Wilmington came into Atlanta with a 17-4 record overall and a 9-1 mark in the CAA to sit tied for first place on Super Bowl Sunday.  A "super" shooting day of 63 percent saw host Georgia State shock the Seahawks, 76-67, as GSU won for the 18th straight time when scoring 70 or more points. Center Cody Paulk exploded with 15 points, 10 rebounds and six blocked shots to lead five Panthers in double figures. UNC Wilmington, No. 11 in the nation in field goal shooting, was held to 39 percent shooting by the aggressive Panthers, who forced 21 turnovers and had seven blocks.
