Logan's Walk-Off Home Run Gives Panthers 5-4 Win

ATLANTA - Senior Bradley Logan belted a two-run walk-off home run to give the Georgia State baseball team a 5-4 win over Air Force on Friday night at the Field at Panthersville. Logan's home run was his ninth of the year set off a wild celebration at home plate and extended the Panthers winning streak to five games.

Logan finished the game 2-for-5 at the plate with two runs scored and three RBIs. Both hits carried significance as his first, a double, gave the Augusta, Ga. native the most doubles in Georgia State history. His 58th double surpassed Mark Mortimer and Charlie Pelt for the most in Panther history.

Down one run in the ninth, senior Carl Moniz battled at the plate before hitting a hard ground ball to Air Force shortstop Matt Roberts who threw wildly to first allowed Moniz to reach. Logan followed with the 36th home run of his career, to give the Panthers the victory.

With the win, Georgia State improved to 19-15 on the season, including a 12-3 record at home. Air Force dropped its ninth straight to fall to 7-26 on the year.

Before the late inning heroics, in which the Panthers battled back from down 4-1 in the eighth inning, pitching was the story of the game.

Coming off a complete game performance last week, junior David Buchanan threw 124 pitches, going 7.2 innings, allowing eight hits and four runs. The Peachtree City native struck out five and walked three, but did not factor in the decision.

Sophomore Justin Malone (3-1) pitched the final 1.1 innings, not allowing a hit to earn the win. In two games this week, Malone has earned both a win and a save.

For the Falcons, Alex Truesdale lasted 6.0 innings, allowing just five hits and one run, while striking out four and walking three. Truesdale too did not factor in the decision, giving way to Steve Colangelo.

Colangelo went 1.1 innings, handing the ball off to Evan Abrecht (1-4) who gave up the fatal home run. Abrecht allowed three hits in one inning of work.

Air Force struck first with two runs in the top of the first to give the Falcons an early lead. Garrett Custons singled to the shortstop, scoring Blair Roberts who was hit by a pitch to lead off the game.

Ben Ausbun gave the Falcons a 2-0 lead with a single through the left side, scoring K.J. Randhawa.

The Panthers rebounded with one in the bottom half of the inning as junior Mark Micowski led off the inning with a walk.

Logan later grounded out to third, scoring Micowski to cut the deficit to one.

The Falcons added one in the fourth and two more in the eighth before the Panther offense returned to its season-long form.

Logan led off the bottom of the eighth with a double to left and scored a batter later when junior Ryan Fleming doubled down the left field line.

Sophomore Daniel Blaustein later singled up the middle, scoring junior Bryan Condotta who had pinch-run for Fleming, cutting the deficit to one and setting up the ninth inning heroics.

Matt Alexander and K.J. Randhawa led the Falcons at the plate, each collecting two hits.

The two teams will return to the field for a doubleheader on Saturday. First pitch of game one is set for 1 p.m. Game two will begin approximately 30 minutes after game one.
