The Georgia State volleyball team continued its hot play with a 3-1 win over Louisiana-Monroe on the second day of the 2009 Great 8 Volleyball Challenge presented by Residence Inn-Kennesaw on Saturday morning at the GSU Sports Arena.
The win improved the Panthers to 5-1, while the Warhawks fell to 0-6. It marks the best start to a season for State under head coach Mike Webster, now in his sixth year with the Panthers.
The Warhawks took the first set 25-22, before State rebounded with a 25-17 second set victory. Down 19-14 in the third set, the Panthers used an 11-1 run to take the set, 25-15, before closing it out in four, 25-18.
Junior Ashley Jones fell just one dig shy of her seventh career triple-double, scoring a team-high 17 kills, 28 assists and nine digs. Jones hit .375 for the match.
Redshirt-sophomore Vineece Verdun earned 10 kills with just three errors for a .438 attack percentage. The Panthers as a team hit .328, while holding ULM to .091, including a .423 deciding set.
Junior Rachel Boryc added 25 assists, while scoring seven kills. Sophomore Muki Kangwa added nine kills and six digs, while redshirt-junior Audrey Cantrell scored a team-high 17 digs.
Freshman Jamie Freeman scored seven kills and added 10 digs in the victory.
Lone senior Jocelyn Waldern added six kills to go along with just one error and a .500 attack percentage as State improved to 2-0 in the tournament.
Mahogany Dilonga scored eight kills to lead ULM. Megan McCoy added a team-high 19 assists in the loss.
In the first match of the morning, Presbyterian College defeated North Carolina A&T in straight sets, 25-11, 25-17 and 25-8. The Blue Hose improved to 3-2 while the Aggies fell to 0-6.
Presbyterian College was led by Lisa Shelley who scored 14 kills with a .407 hitting percentage. Presley Mabrey added 11 kills, while Kilee Ruppe scored a team high 28 assists.
The Blue Hose held the Aggies to a -.038 hitting percentage as Janae Mitchell led A&T with just three kills.

The final session of this year's event will take place on Saturday afternoon with North Carolina A&T taking on Louisiana-Monroe in the opener at 4 p.m. The Panthers will follow at 6 p.m., taking on Presbyterian.
