Former Georgia State student-athletes Anton Reese and Markeal King have both earned their college degrees after an around the world way of accomplishing the feat.
Reese and King both played their final season at State during the 1999-2000 season under Coach “Lefty” Driesell. Professional basketball lured them overseas before they completed their coursework. With that now behind them, they came back to their native Atlanta and the downtown campus to complete that important task.
Reese, a 6-4 outside scorer and dead-eye shooter, was a two-time all-conference pick who averaged 16 points per game during his two years at State. Reese swished 165 three-point baskets in his two years to still rank third in school history after his 86-trey season that also ranks third in school history. Reese made nine three's in a game to set a school record that has been tied, but never topped. A top recruit out of Lithonia High by Connecticut, Reese started at Alabama before finally transferring to his hometown. His professional basketball tour included stops in China, Venezuela, Colombia and Mexico.
Reese earned his diploma in sociology this summer.
King, a 6-foot-nine post player, played two years of junior college ball before coming to Georgia State for his final two seasons. He played in 47 games in the Panther blue and enjoyed a double-figure game when State upset Hawaii as part of a holiday tournament.
King is an Atlanta native and graduate of Westlake High. He majored in criminal justice at Georgia State.
Last year, King coached in the WBA for the Decatur Court Kings here in metro Atlanta. King had played professionally in Lebanon.
Reese sat down with the Voice of the Panthers, Dave Cohen, to catch up on his days playing in Sports Arena.
