Softball Shuts Out Mason; Lee Sets RBI Record

ATLANTA ? Catcher Catherine Lee set a new school RBI record (51) as she batted 5-for-7 with four doubles, collected five RBIs and scored five runs as Georgia State (27-8, 6-2 CAA) shut-out George Mason (10-23, 2-6 CAA), 14-0 and 8-0, in day one of the Colonial Athletic Association weekend.

Lee, a freshman from Covington, Ga., set a new single season Georgia State record as she brought home her 51st RBI of the season in game two of the doubleheader. The previous RBI record was held by Heather Smith, who brought home 48 runners in 1988.

In the first game, State's entire batting lineup reached base and scored in the top of the first inning, giving the Panthers an early 9-0 lead. Lee finished the first game 3-for-4, with three doubles and three runs batted in. Berry also went 3-for-4, scoring two of the Panthers 14 runs.

Alicia Mills threw the shutout for State in game one, improving her record to 12-4.  Mills allowed just six hits and  two walks, while fanning ten batters in five innings.

In game two, junior outfielder Natasha Berry put the Panthers to an early 1-0 lead as she belted a solo homerun in the top of the first, her third of the season. The Panthers brought home five more runs in the top of the fourth, including a two-out double from freshman Lee, giving State a 7-0 lead. Designated player, Alicia Mills, belted a solo homer in the top of the fifth, giving her three on the season. Rachel Cunningham was a perfect 3-for-3 in game two with two RBIs.

Senior right-hand hurler Ashley Cowan completed the shutout for State, improving her record to 6-2. Cowan allowed just five hits in five innings, fanning four Patriots.

State returns to the diamond Sunday at 11 a.m. for a single game in day two of the CAA series against George Mason in Fairfax, Va. After the conference match-up, the Panthers return to Bob Heck Field on Wednesday, April 9, as they host a doubleheader against Auburn at 4 p.m. in Panthersville.
