ATLANTA ? Hurlers Madi Gore and Ashley Cowan combined for a pair of shut-outs as Georgia State (33-16, 11-5 CAA) swept UNC-Wilmington (12-29-1, 3-14 CAA), 5-0 and 4-0, in a Colonial Athletic Association doubleheader on Saturday at Boseman Field.
Sophomore infielder Rachel Cunningham connected with her fourth homerun of the season in the first game, while teammate Lily Skelton finished the day batting 2-for-5 and catcher Catherine Lee drove in two RBI on her 15th double of the season.
In the first game, State took a 3-0 lead in the top of the fourth after combining two hits from freshman Rebecca Roles and Natasha Berry, and taking advantage of a couple Seahawk throwing errors.
Cunningham put two more runs on the board in the top of the fifth as she belted a two-run homerun over the left field fence, scoring senior Jessica Gowin, who drew a walk earlier in the inning.
Right-hander Gore threw seven straight scoreless innings, allowing seven hits and zero walks, while fanning seven batters. She improves her record to 12-7 on the season.
In the second game, the Panthers scored all their runs in the top of the fifth as freshman Lauren Jones led off the inning with a single to right field. Roles sacrificed Jones to second, before junior outfielder Holly Willis legged out a bunt single. Danielle Roddy reached on a throwing error by the Seahawks, scoring Jones from third. Berry then laid down a bunt single, scoring Willis from third, giving State a 2-0 lead. With one out and two on, Lee hit a double to left center, scoring both runs and putting the Panthers up 4-0.
Ashley Cowan tossed the shut-out win for State, improving her record to 8-5, allowing eight hits and three walks, while sitting down one UNCW batter.
The two teams conclude their three-game series Sunday at 11 a.m. in Wilmington, N.C. at the UNCW softball complex.
