Panthersville, Ga. ? The Georgia State (31-14, 9-5 CAA) softball team defeated Towson (28-20, 9-5 CAA), 5-1, in the final match-up of the Colonial Athletic Association weekend series at Bob Heck Field on Sunday. Catcher Catherine Lee finished the game batting 2-for-3, belting her 15th homerun of the season, with two RBIs and one run scored.
Designated player Lily Skelton also finished the day batting 2-for-3, with two runs batted in. Infielders Rachel Cunningham and Jessica Gowin each connected with a double.
Junior right-hand hurler Madi Gore tossed the complete game win for the Panthers, improving her record to 11-6, allowing just four hits and two walks, striking out three through seven innings of work.
In the top of the first, the Tigers put a run on the board as Mindy Bean led off the game with a solo shot to centerfield for a 1-0 lead.
Lee answered back in the bottom of the inning, connecting with her 15th homer of the season, tying both teams at one.
State rallied to take the lead when sophomore infielder Cunningham led off the fourth inning with a double to the right field gap. Senior Gowin followed suit with a double to the right field fence, brining home Cunningham, putting the Panthers ahead 2-1.
In the bottom of fifth, Natasha Berry led off with an infield single, followed by a bunt-single from Holly Willis. With runners on first and second, Lee drew a walk, loading the bases for Skelton. The sophomore connected with a single through the left side, scoring Berry from third and Willis from second, giving State a 4-1 advantage.
State put up another run in the sixth, giving the Panthers a final score of 5-1.
The two wins in the series give State a tie-breaker should the teams remain tied at the end of the regular season. Both are 9-5 and tied for second today.
Georgia State travels across town to in-state rival Georgia Tech on Wednesday, April 23, for a doubleheader, slated to begin at 3 p.m. The Panthers travel next weekend to UNC Wilmington for the final road game series of the regular season and return home in two weeks for the season finale with Drexel.
