Catherine Lee smashed a walk-off homerun in the bottom of the seventh to put the Panthers on top of Towson, 2-1, in the first game of the Colonial Athletic Association doubleheader on Saturday. Towson won the second game, 7-4.
The long-ball was Lee's 14th of the season, adding to her current single-season record. The freshman from Covington, Ga. went 3-for-7 on the day with a double, one run and one run batted in. Freshman infielder
Rebecca Roles finished the first game a perfect 3-for-3 with three singles, going 1-for-3 in the second game.
Madi Gore tossed the win for State, improving her record to 10-5. Through seven innings, she allowed only seven hits and two walks, while fanning six batters. Gore also finished the second game, pitching 1-2/3 innings and taking the loss, putting her at 10-6 for the season.
In the first game, Towson jumped on the board early when Emily Gould drove in a run on a single to left field.
The Panthers tied it up in the bottom of the sixth when
Lily Skelton singled up the middle. Roles singled to center, advancing
Lauren Fetters, who pinch-ran for Skelton, to third. Junior outfielder
Holly Willis produced a squeeze bunt, scoring Fetters and tying the game at one.
In the bottom of the seventh, Lee finished the game with a one-out, full-count drive over the left field fence, tying State with Towson for second place in conference standings.
State scored first in the second game when Willis led off the top of the third with an infield single, on a throwing error by the shortstop, Willis advanced to third. The next batter, Berry, drove in Willis from third with a single to left field, giving the Panthers a 1-0 lead.
After going scoreless for five innings, Towson rallied to put up five runs in the top of the sixth when Nina Navarro singled a run home before Aimee Rosa and Stephanie Fudurich each hit homeruns, collecting two RBIs a piece.
The Panther's could only get back three runs, as the Tigers brought home two more in the top of the fifth, putting the final score at 7-4.
The two teams conclude their three-game series Sunday at 12 p.m. at
Bob Heck Field.
