Panthersville, Ga. ? The Georgia State softball team improved its record to 16-3 with a doubleheader sweep over Toledo, 9-4, and 6-2, as freshman CAA Rookie of the Week catcher
Catherine Lee finished the day going 4-for-7, hitting her seventh and eighth home runs of the season at
Bob Heck Field in Panthersville.
Madi Gore (5-2) completed the first game for the Panthers, allowing seven hits and striking out eight. Freshman
Alicia Mills (7-1) garnered the win in the nightcap for the Panthers. She pitched a total of four and one third innings, allowing no runs, while striking out ten Rockets.
Sophomore third basemen
Danielle Roddy completed the day batting 4-for-6 with three doubles and four runs scored. Junior outfielder
Natasha Berry batted 3-for-6 in two games with one RBI and three runs scored.
Game One:The Panthers scored in first inning when Roddy doubled to left center. Lee was hit by pitch, putting runners on first and second.
Lauren Jones singled up the middle, bringing home Roddy.
Rachel Cunningham followed with a hard hit single up the middle, scoring Lee and putting the Panthers up 2-0.
In the second junior
Holly Willis led off with a bunt single to third base. Roddy then doubled for the second time, putting runners on second and third. Lee singled up the middle, scoring both runners. Skelton doubled to left, scoring Lee. Cunningham singled up the middle, scoring Skelton from second, giving the Panthers a 6-2 lead.
State added another run in the fourth as
Natasha Berry led of the inning with a double to right field. Lee smashed a line drive up the middle, putting runners on first and third. Skelton grounded out to the pitcher, allowing Berry to score on the throw to first.
The Panthers brought across two more runs in the bottom fifth as Roles led off the inning with a hard hit single up the middle. Willis legged out bunt single, putting runners on first and second. Roddy walked, loading the bases. Berry hit a sac fly to left field, scoring Roles on third. With runners on first and third, Berry stole second, drawing a throw, allowing Willis to score.
For Toledo, center fielder Erica Singer brought home three of the Rocket's four runs, batting 2-for-2 with two home runs.
Game Two:State scored instantly when Roddy and Berry led off the first inning with back to back doubles, bringing Lee to the plate to hit her seventh home run of the season putting the Panthers up 3-1.
State pushed across three more in the bottom of the fifth when Roddy started the two-out rally with a single up the middle, Berry followed suit with another single to center field. With two on, two strikes and two outs, Lee belted her second homer of the day and eighth of the season, putting the Panthers on top 6-2.
The Panthers return to action when head down to Tallahassee, Fla. as they take on the University of Connecticut at 10 a.m. on Friday, March 7 in the first game of the FSU Invitational.
