The Georgia State softball team (22-6, 3-0 CAA) defeated Delaware (10-9, 0-3 CAA) 10-5 in the final game of the three-game Colonial Athletic Association series on Saturday, March 22 as junior outfielder Holly Willis went 3-for-4 with three RBI and one run scored.
Freshman catcher Catherine Lee ended the day batting 2-for-4, driving in two runs and crossing the plate once for the Panthers. Freshman infielder Rebecca Roles also brought home two runs on two hits.
Right-hand hurler Alicia Mills (10-3) completed the game for State, facing 35 batters, fanning 14, and allowing only one earned run.
After taking both games on Friday, the Panthers stepped out in front early in the third game, when Roles started the two-out rally with a RBI double to left center in the top of the second inning. State strung together three singles and a walk, and on two Delaware errors, they put five more runs on the board, jumping out to a 6-0 lead.
The Panthers pushed across another run in the third, and did not stop in the fifth when senior infielder Jessica Gowin started the inning with a single to left field. Sophomore Rachel Cunningham followed suit with a single through the left side. With runners on first and second, Roles came up with a single to right center, scoring Cunningham from second. Willis then drove in another run with a drive to right field.
The Panthers collectively put another run on the board in the sixth, giving State a 10-4 lead. In the bottom of the seventh, the Blue Hens tried to fight back, but the Panthers held them to a single run, making the final score 10-5.
The Panthers return to action when they host a doubleheader against Harvard on Monday, March 24, starting at 3 p.m. at Bob Heck Field in Panthersville.
