State Defeats Savannah State 33-2, 19-0

Panthersville, Ga. ? Freshman Lauren Jones drove in a school-record eight runs and freshman Catherine Lee set another school record with six hits in the first game, while freshman Alicia Mills and sophomore Liz Thomas threw a combined no-hitter in the nightcap as the Georgia State softball team improved to 6-0 with a doubleheader sweep of Savannah State, 33-2, and 19-0, Tuesday at Bob Heck Field.

State's 33-2 victory marks the highest run total and largest victory margin in Georgia State softball history. The previous high for runs scored came during a 22-1 victory over Greensboro in 1988. The 19-0 victory in game two equals the Panthers' largest shutout margin, equaling a 19-0 win over Wilmington (Ohio) in 1988.

In the first game, the Panthers totaled 30 hits in just five innings. Lee went 6-for-6 while Jones drove in her eight runs on five hits. Danielle Roddy finished the game with four hits in five at bats, including two triples and three RBI.  Outfielder Holly Willis went a perfect 2-for-2, scoring two runs and batting in four.

Junior hurler Chelsey Morgan threw a two-hitter, allowing only two runs while striking out eight of the 15 batters she faced.

In the nightcap, Mills started in the circle for State, pitching three hit-less innings while fanning seven of nine batters.  Sophomore teammate Thomas finished the 19-0 victory in two innings, closing the book on the Panthers' no-hitter.

Jones led the offensive again in the second game going 3-for-4 with two doubles and a home run, her first of the season.  Senior Jessica Gowin also had three hits, including a double and four RBIs.

State returns to action Sunday, hosting a 1 p.m. doubleheader against Western Carolina at Bob Heck Field in Panthersville, Ga.
