Panthersville, Ga. ? The Georgia State Panthers defeated the Lipscomb Lady Bisons, 6-2, in the final game of pool play on Sunday at the Georgia State First Pitch Classic in Panthersville. Sophomore Rachel Cunningham drove in four runs for the Panthers, while junior hurler Madi Gore held the Lady Bisons to seven hits and two runs. With three wins, the Panthers move on to today's championship game against UT Martin at 4:45 p.m.
The Panthers jumped on board early when sophomore Danielle Roddy led off the inning with a hard hit single up the middle. Number three batter, Catherine Lee followed with a line shot down the left field line, advancing Roddy to third. With two on and two out, Rachel Cunningham connected with a long drive over the left field fence, putting the Panthers up 3-0 in the first.
State continued the rally in the second when Roddy doubled in Rebecca Roles and Holly Willis with a shot to the gap in left center, putting the Panthers up by five.
In the bottom of the fourth, Abby Keese put the Lady Bisons on the board with a solo homerun to left center.
The Panthers answered back in the top of the fifth when Cunningham doubled down the left field line, scoring Lee from second. That was all the Panthers would need to hold on to the win, as Lipscomb fought to put one more run across the plate in the bottom of the sixth.
Roddy and Cunningham each completed the game going 2-for-4. Cunningham led the Panther offense with 4 of the Panther RBI's, while Roddy picked up the remaining 2.
Madi Gore was in the circle for State, allowing only 2 runs, 7 hits and fanning 3 batters. Gore's record moves up to 2-0 as State's record stands strong at 3-0
