The Best of the Best

The October 29 issue of Sports Illustrated has produced a four-page fold-out that picks the Best basketball players ever, based on their height. The magazine created one list, including men and women in the same list, from the heights of 5-foot-3 through 7-foot-7. It is part of a promotion for the magazine's 296-page Basketball book that is now on sale online and through newstands.

The illustrious list includes a total of 101 players, with no more than three at any of the specific height by inches. Many of the men are known just by one name, like Michael, Wilt, Kareem, Spud, and Oscar. On the women's side, it's the same with Sheryl and Cheryl, Teresa and Nancy, Dawn and Ann.

But, right there with the 5-foot-4 legends is Georgia State's Lea Henry. Lea was a Kodak high school All-American player in Georgia and was recruited by Pat Summitt to the University of Tennessee. A four-year starter, Lea was an All-SEC point guard (1979-83) and played on three Final Four teams. One of the best passers in women's basketball history, Lea started on the 1984 U.S.A. Olympic gold medal-winning team. She played on 10 USA teams in various international events, winning other medals as well. She played one year in the women's pro league with the Houston Shamrocks. Since, she's turned into a highly-successful college coach with 210 wins in 13 years at Georgia State and 268 for her 17-year career. Lea has already been inducted into the University of Tennessee Lady Vols Hall of Fame and the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame.
