Panthers Drop Road Game to ODU

NORFOLK, Va. (Jan. 29) – Georgia State dropped a 92-57 Colonial Athletic Association game at Old Dominion before 5,772 at the Constant Convocation Center.

Georgia State (7-14, 3-8) was led in scoring by Lance Perique with 16 points, Brandon Cartwright with 12 points and eight rebounds and Leonard Mendez with 11 points. Deven Dickerson led with nine rebounds and two blocks.

Old Dominion (15-7, 8-3) won its third straight game and has not lost a CAA home game this season. Five Monarchs scored in double figures, led by Arnaud Dahi and Drew Williamson with 14 points. Brian Henderson and Gerald Lee each scored 12 points.

The Monarchs shot 51 percent for the game with nine three-point baskets as they grew a 16-point halftime margin to 20 points at the 14-minute mark and never let the visiting Panthers get any closer.

“Yes, the atmosphere at ODU is tremendous, but the part that wins the games is the fact that the team is very good,” Coach Michael Perry said post game. “Brandon Cartwright gives great effort night in and night out and his effort can be contagious. He hustles to make things happen and that's what a coach wants.”

In the first half, host ODU made its first five shots to open a quick 11-4 lead in just three minutes. As the Monarchs made it nine-of-13, they opened a 19-8 lead at 13:03. But Georgia State fought back and closed it to 23-16 at 9:05 after baskets by Trae Goldston and Brandon Cartwright. With four three-point baskets, ODU went on a 21-3 burst to increase the advantage to 44-19 at 2:36. Georgia State finished the first half with a four-point play from Leonard Mendez as he hit a three-point shot from the corner and was fouled to close the gap to 46-29 at the break.

The Panthers return to Atlanta for a Wednesday night game with UNC Wilmington and a chance for a first-ever season sweep with a CAA opponent. Game time at the Georgia State Sports Arena is 7 p.m.
