Panthers Win Dome Exhibition

Georgia State found some new weaponry in its 68-49 exhibition game victory over Clark Atlanta in a game played Tuesday night at the Georgia Dome before 1,429.

Georgia State opens the regular season on Saturday afternoon at home in an ESPN Bracket Buster re-match game with the College of Charleston that will mark the return to coaching of Bobby Cremins. Who played well tonight for State will help determine who gets the most minutes in the 2 p.m season opener at the Sports Arena.

The new weaponry came in the form of the two seniors, forwards Lance Perique and Brandon Cartwright, who scored 25 and 14 points, respectively, while grabbing seven and eight rebounds, respectively as well.  Another new assault weapon appears to be freshman point guard Trae Goldston who scored 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting.

"I saw what I had seen all fall from those two seniors," a pleased Coach Perry said post game. "And I like what I saw from the freshmen, especially Goldston, Norman Mitchell and Kevin Lott.  Trae's offensive aggressiveness helped us tonight because he caused their defense problems."

Perry also singled out sophomore forward Rashad Chase, who was playing center in place of Deven Dickerson and Justin Billingslea tonight. Chase had six rebounds, two steals and a block on defense despite getting into foul trouble and playing just 24 minutes.

This game marks the first basketball game to be played at the Georgia Dome as it was a test run for the last basketball game to be played in the NCAA this season when the Final Four comes to Atlanta on March 31 and April 2. The NCAA operations folks were in town yesterday and today with the Dome and Georgia Tech staffs also double-checking all the details of college basketball's biggest event.
