ATLANTA - The Georgia State University women's basketball 2004 summer camps begin Monday, June 14 on campus at the GSU Sports Arena in downtown Atlanta.
The 19th annual Lea Henry Camp of Champs will take place from June 14-17 and is open to girls ages 7-18 at the cost of $175 per camper. Each day of the camp will run from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. and feature numerous awards and giveaways. All offensive and defensive fundamentals of basketball will be covered.
From June 18-20, Georgia State will also conduct a Team Camp where high school and AAU squads can compete in a round-robin tournament over three days at the cost of $500 per team. The tournament games will take place on three air-conditioned courts and be officiated by licensed referees.
The staff for both camps consists of Henry, the Lady Panther head coach, along with assistant coaches Stephany Raines and Tammy Hill. Several other college coaches and players are expected to be on hand for instruction.
Henry just completed her 10th season at the helm of the Georgia State program and has 170 career wins at State, more than any other basketball coach--women or men--in the school's history. With her guidance, the Lady Panthers have put together seven straight winning seasons, including five consecutive with 18 or more victories.
Under Henry, Georgia State has advanced to the NCAA Tournament in three of the past four years and the Women's National Invitation Tournament in 2000. State won the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament championship three times in the last four campaigns; at least a share of the conference regular season title in 2001, 2002 and 2004; and the A-Sun North Division crown in 2003.
While with the Lady Panthers, Henry has been selected as the Georgia College Division I Women's Coach of the Year by the Atlanta Tipoff Club three times (1998, 2000 and 2002) and as the conference Coach of the Year in 2000.
Henry's overall record at Georgia State stands at 170-118 (.590). Her overall career record as a Division I head coach is 228-176 (.564).
Prior to coming to Atlanta, Henry spent four seasons at Mercer University (1990-94) and was the interim head coach at the University of Florida for six games at the end of the 1989-90 campaign.
