Georgia State Head Coach Trent Miles
Opening statement...
"Our kids battled today. Give Western Kentucky and Coach Petrino the credit. They found a way to win the football game. We dug ourselves a huge hole. We were unable to sustain any drives in the first half with our offense except for one big play. We had too many three-and-outs and left our defense on the field way too much. We can't turn the football over. There's very little margin for error with us and unfortunately we dug ourselves a hole. The kids battled back and made it a game. At one point it was a 10 point game. They [Western Kentucky] were able to go down and extend the lead. The kids showed again that they're fighters. We went back out and answered it and put it ourselves back in the game, but give Western Kentucky the credit."
On the three-and-outs in the first half...
"A lot had to do with running the football. Our first run of the game is minus two yards. And then we're second and long, and then it's third and long. The odds are horrible for you. We were much better in the second half, spreading them out, going up tempo and popping some runs that way. I'll go on record saying we will be an up tempo team the rest of the year. We're not going to hide it. Every coach who plays us is a smart coach and they'll watch our film, so it doesn't matter what I say here, as they're going to watch it anyway."
On the running game struggles...
"I thought we moved the ball pretty well in the second half. Obviously we'd love to have more than 85 yards of rushing. We were able to throw the ball around a little bit. We won't make any excuses about who's out there. I'm not going to do that. Those kids coach well and practice hard. There's no excuse."
On Ronnie Bell's play...
"He obviously played much better than last week. There's still issues. Ronnie's out there trying as hard as he can. He made good decisions, but sometimes in the heat of battle he'll make a decision here or there we'll want to coach him on. He played much better. Last week he completed two passes. This week he completed 26-of-41 with 325 yards. Obviously he played much better than last week. He's still a work in progress."
On Jonathan Jean-Bart's play...
"We're going to keep playing him more. It's hard to bench a senior with three more games to go in his career for a freshman. To me, it doesn't matter who starts as they're both [Travis Evans and Jean-Bart] going to play. Jonathan is going to play more and more and more. It really doesn't matter who starts."
Noting the Panthers
Ronnie Bell's 67-yard touchdown pass to Robert Davis is the fifth-longest pass play in GSU history, and the longest reception by anyone other than Albert Wilson.
Brent McClendon's interception in the third quarter was his second of the season and the fifth of his career, tying him with Demazio Skelton for the GSU career record.
Freshman Jonathan Jean-Bart scored his first touchdown in the third quarter, and sophomore Avery Sweeting scored his first career touchdown in the fourth quarter.
Over the last two games, Jonathan Jean-Bart has rushed for 114 yards on 17 carries.
Ronnie Bell recorded his third 300-yard passing game of the season. He has three of the four 300-yard games in school history.
Avery Sweeting notched career highs with five catches for 71 yards.
Georgia State held WKU running back Antonio Andrews below 150 all-purpose yards for just the third time in his career and first time in his last 16 games.
Western Kentucky Head Coach Bobby Petrino
Opening Statement
“It was a good win for us and I was really proud of our players. I think all week long we had a good attitude. We worked hard in practice and we prepared well. I thought the team came out today and had fun out there and played hard. We didn't do everything right but we executed. We were able to score enough points and defend well enough to get a win.
On starting quarterback Brandon Doughty being injured:
“I think he is going to be okay. But you never know because it was a big hit and it was a situation where he was unable to return to the game. I am hopeful that he will be okay but I won't know more until tomorrow.
On red zone touchdowns
“We did a good job at executing. I think our offensive line and tight ends have to be given credit. We utilized our tight ends a lot today and they really did a nice job.
On improvement
“I'm sure when we get home tomorrow there is going to be a lot on the video that we need to improve upon. But again, I liked the attitude and work ethic, plus coming out and playing hard. I thought our players stuck together. We could get better at the football things as long as we stick together as a team.
