Postgame Quotes

Georgia State Head Coach Bill Curry

"We were beaten on both sides of the ball at the line of scrimmage.  The one thing we did do was to fight coming out after the half, and when we took the lead, I was sure we were going to win.  But, instead of us dominating and taking over the game, Lambuth dominated and took over the game.  We made the mistakes, they knocked us off the ball, the statistics are overwhelmingly in their favor, and they simply out-coached us and beat us today.  If you can't stop the other team's run, and you can't run the ball well, and you don't have rhythm in the passing game, then you're in trouble.

"The most disappointing part was for us to take the lead in the fourth quarter, and then relinquish it on a long drive that we could have stopped many times.  But, you have to give them the credit.  They did a great job, we did not, and you just have to go back to work."

On the team's offensive struggles in the game...

"We just never really blocked them well.  Football is a game of physical dominance.  You have to whip the guy across from you, and we just never got that done at any point."

On the team's youth affecting the results of the game...

"We don't make excuses, but I don't think that had anything to do with it.  I think that it is not a matter of youth.  It's a matter of coming off the ball low and hard, over and over and beating the guy.  So I don't think that's what we were seeing.  What we were seeing was that we're not ready to go four quarters, and whip the guy across from us every single play."

On putting Kelton Hill at quarterback ...

"We put Hill in because he has such obvious play-making capacity and he understands the offense better than Star right now, and he had the hot hand.  We were rolling with him, quite frankly.  But, to have the tipped ball for the interception and the touchdown, it took us right out of it... What Kelton gave us, on a day when we were not handling their physicality very well, was maneuverability... We were just trying to use our weapons to the best of our ability, but when it doesn't work, you're wrong.  And, I was wrong."

On the quarterback situation going forward...

"We have to study what the circumstances were.  A lot of times you think a quarterback played a terrible game, and when you go back and watch, the routes weren't run crisply, or he was being hit as he threw, or other things you didn't see at the time.  We really do have to evaluate."

On what he learned about his team during the game...

"I didn't think anybody could manhandle us physically like that.  I learned that was very disappointing... We work at basics everyday, because of the fact that we are young team.  We got better at basics this week, but did not play with them.  So we are going to keep doing what we are doing because eventually it works, and learn to execute and keep our head up, and knock people off the ball, and run with authority.  I knew Lambuth was good up front, but we made them look even better."

On the effect being on the field so much had on its defense...

"It was devastating.  I don't care who you are.  Even if you have a great defense, you get worn down by having to go out there over and over and over... There's no question that we wore out our defense.  Football is a team game.  The offense has its responsibility and did not meet it today, except for the long run, and the halfback pass.  Those were really the only two things we did well... We did not sustain anything offensively and I could not be more surprised."

On the different atmosphere from the opener affecting the team's performance...

"If you ever allow yourself to think you need a certain atmosphere to play football, then you're in trouble... We love it for the people to enjoy... If there are a lot of them, fine, if not, fine.  We're going to play the same way all the time, but we did not do that.  So I don't think that mattered."

On any silver linings to the loss...

"We will see a lot of people in the film.  We always do.  On bad days you find people who play well, but everybody has to play well... There were a lot of times where we had them in third down situations, and we had to have the ball and we could not get it."

If he felt the team was complacent during the week...

"I was disappointed early in the week, but we got better as the week progressed and we practiced well down the stretch.  I felt we were as well prepared to play this week as we were last week, but obviously we were not... You have to be able to get it from the practice field to the game field.  You have to practice and practice until that becomes the habit, and then you play like that every Saturday.  That is our goal, but we have not learned that yet, and that is my job."

On the difference in competition between Shorter and Lambuth...

"We scheduled this intentionally, not thinking there would be as big a difference between this week and last week... Our performance had a lot to do with it.  Certainly, Lambuth deserves everything that we said about them, but our performance helped them more than it should have.  The idea is to play tougher and tougher competition, so you learn to be tougher and tougher."

GSU Wide Receiver Danny Williams

"It's a game.  There's a winner and a loser to every one.  I'm disappointed that we got the short end of the stick, but it doesn't mean we are a bad team.  It means we have just got to work harder and play our hearts out next time."

On his big catch...

"When the ball was up in the air I was actually telling myself, 'please don't drop it.'  It hung up in the air for a while.  When I caught it I said, 'I've got to get in the end zone."

On the difference between the first and second half...

"It's not that we couldn't get anything going in the first half, it is just that we had a little bit of bad luck in the first half.  We've got a good offense.  Coach John Bond knows his stuff.  We had some big plays in the second half.

Running Back Travis Evans

On his touchdown run...

"Well, I let the line know that I got them.  They said that they got me too.  Our offensive line helped me get in the end zone, so that was their touchdown."

On the disappointing loss...

"Nobody likes to lose.  I hate losing, but now that we know what it feels like we will try to make it so that nobody feels this way again."

On the attendance being considerably less than last week...

"Coach Curry told us that there is nobody out there when we practice.  It is just us.  It doesn't matter if you have got 30,000, 2 or 12.  As long as we bring our A-game, we can play anywhere, anytime."

On playing Jacksonville State next week...

We've just got to correct our mistakes tomorrow and get focused on next Saturday."

Running Back Rosevelt Watson

On momentum gained after his touchdown...

"I think it changed the game a lot.  It gave us a lot of momentum and a big boost, but at the end of the game, it just didn't work out for us."

On what can be taken away from the loss...

"It's a tough loss.  We learned how to play in the fourth quarter.  We know that we're not going to be up in the fourth quarter and some games we will have to really pick it up at the end.

"We played our hearts out.  I'm really proud of our guys.  We are working every day and we are going to get better.  It is just one game."

Lambuth Head Coach Ron Dickerson

On Importance of Win

"A win like this is extremely important for recruiting. I know it is important to the players personally today to get a big win, but it is huge for the school down the road. A win like this is simply fantastic for us all."

On sophomore RB  Marquis Williams

"We call him Skeeter. He showed every bit of his nickname skeeting all over the field today. He actually surprised me a little bit. He is always darting around in practice and he did an excellent job in a big game today. That first half had us all enthusiastic on the sidelines just watching him run."

On Defense In Second Half

"Well, we knew they had to throw. So, we knew we had to defend to be more pass conscious than run conscious. At the end, we rushed our normal pass rushers, but played a little more of what we call our victory defense and it worked. This was a great win."
