Women's track and field coach Kyle Stevenson hired by GSU as an assistant in 2017, eventually earning the title of head coach in the summer of 2019. He came to the Panthers following a successful track career of his own and a notable coaching stint as assistant track and field coach at Saint Martin’s University.
This past season, Stevenson led the team to many successes, including five all-Sun Belt conference honors, the cross country team having the highest GPA of all Division I teams, and a conference championship for senior Marine Garnier in the 3000m steeplechase. He also coached the 2022 DMR team to an indoor conference title.
His Georgia State career has also been highlighted by long jumper Jaeda Hunt’s conference title in 2021, Hunt’s school long jump record in 2019, and the 4x800 team of Alonso, Prop, Meyberg, and Ramirez setting a school record for the event in 2018.
Himself a former runner, Stevenson graduated from the University of Tennessee where he was a two-time All American. He began his career as a freshman walk-on and eventually climbed his way to team captain and All-American honors in 2007 and 2008 as a part of the squad’s 4x100m relay team. During the summer of 2007, Stevenson joined Team USA for the Junior Pan American Team where he competed in the 200m (placing 4th) and the 4x100m (placing 1st). He was also a seven-time scorer at the SEC Championship in four different events, including claiming the 4x100m SEC title in 2007 and finishing runner-up for the same event in 2008. His personal bests are 6.68 for the 50m, 10.29 for the 100m, and 20.76 in the 200m. His fastest 4x100m relay time was 38.88, outpacing many notable athletes.
In high school, the sprinter established records in the 400m with a time of 48.44 while also defending his 200m state championship in 2006. With these accomplishments, Stevenson became only the sixth athlete to win the 200m state title twice.
The Memphis, Tennessee native got his start in coaching with stops at Austin East High School and Hardin Valley Academy. At Austin East, the boys 4x100 team placed fourth at the 2011 TSSAA State Championship – the team’s first appearance at state in over five years.
Stevenson then coached at East Tennessee State where he helped his women’s team finish third at both the indoor and outdoor Southern Conference Championships. While coaching some of the women sprinters and hurdlers, his teams set three school records: the indoor 60m hurdles (8.29), outdoor 100 meters (11.65), and 100-meter hurdles (13.35). The 100m hurdle race was a Southern Conference record. In addition, he helped the men place third in the SoCON Championships.
After East Tennessee State, Stevenson moved on to Saint Martin’s University where he guided high jumper Mikel Smith to the University’s first, second, and only national championship in any sport.
Stevenson earned his Bachelor of Science degree in sports management from Tennessee in 2010 and went on to receive a Master of Science degree in Kinesiology – with a focus on sports psychology and motor behavior – from UT in 2011.
