Biography

Spring 2008: Competed in two doubles matches in the spring before suffering season-ending injury...Was awarded the Leland Whettan Award by the School of Accountancy for her outstanding ability in accounting theory...Presented with the High Five Scholarship Award for having the highest GPA with a 3.98.

 

Fall 2007: Recorded a 6-6 singles record in the fall season...Won two of three matches at the Georgia Tech Fall Classic, defeating players from Tech, Furman and Harvard...Won two of four matches at the Charlotte Invitational...Partnered with Martina Nitkova and Dariana Kozmina in doubles...Posted a perfect 4.0 GPA and earned Faculty Scholar honors for the second time in her collegiate career.

 

Spring 2007: Finished the season with a 10-11 overall record...Split time between the No. 4 and No. 5 positions...Had a five match win streak towards the end of the season...Defeated opponent versus No. 75 Troy on March 31...Doubled with Emma Stahl-Johansson (1-4) and Brittany Smith (5-9) for a combined 6-13 mark...Received Dean’s List and Athletic Director’s Honor Roll honors...Named CAA Commissioner’s Academic Award recipient.

 

Fall 2006: Did not participate due to injury....Named to the Dean’s List and the Athletics Director’s Honor Roll.

 

Spring 2006: Mateja posted a 6-12 singles record in dual match play...She was 3-4 from the No. 3 spot and 3-8 at the No. 4 for the Panthers...Mateja fi nished with a 4-9 overall doubles record...Mateja has a perfect 4.0 GPA and was named a Faculty Scholar and earned a spot on the Dean’s List and Athletics Director’s Honor Roll...She received a Commissioner’s Academic Award from the CAA.

 

Fall 2005: Teamed with Anne Breiholtz and won a match at Thomasville...Finished the fall doubles with a 2-4 record...Competed in the Thomasville Invitational and the ITA Southern Championships...Ended the fall single season 0-5.

 

Spring 2005: Had a successful freshman campaign with a 16-8 singles record... Saw the most playing time at No. 4 in singles and at the No. 2 slot in doubles at the end of the 2005 season. .. Was 9-14 in doubles in her first year of NCAA Division I competition.

 

Prep: Ranked in the top 10 in women’s tennis in Slovenia. Went to the doubles semifi nals at the Women’s National Championships in 2003...Won a few Slovenian Women’s Tournaments and tournaments in the under-18 division...Went to the semifinals in the ITF Tournament in Croatia in 2002 and 2003.

 

Personal: Born April 21, 1985 in Ljubljana, Slovenia...Daughter of Jure and Estela Podgorsek...Has an older sister, Maja...Enjoys dancing, shopping, sports, and hanging out with friends...Dad inspires her tennis career...Double majoring in Accounting and Finance.
