Former Georgia State quarterback Nick Arbuckle has signed with the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League (CFL) and been added to the team's practice squad.
CFL teams are permitted to carry up to 15 practice-roster players (up from the usual 10) for a one-month period.
Arbuckle passed for more than 7,600 yards and 51 touchdowns as the Panthers' starting quarterback the last two seasons. He was named the 2015 Sun Belt Conference Student-Athlete of the Year.
His signing was announced one day after a big moment for another Georgia State football alumnus in the pros. Arbuckle's former teammate, placekicker Wil Lutz, booted a 57-yard field goal for the New Orleans Saints in last night's Monday Night Football contest against the Atlanta Falcons.
Lutz was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Baltimore Ravens and then picked up by the Saints just prior to the season opener. He is the third former Panther to play in an NFL regular-season game.
Georgia State currently has four alumni active in professional football:
Nick Arbuckle, Calgary Stampeders (CFL), practice squad
Ulrick John, Miami Dolphins, practice squad
Wil Lutz, New Orleans Saints
Albert Wilson, Kansas City Chiefs
