GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Georgia State women's soccer made history Sunday night with a 2-1 victory over Florida at Donald R. Dizney Stadium, earning the program's first win over an SEC opponent since 2005.
The Panthers rallied from a goal down with two scores in a four-minute span during the second half to stun the Gators on their home field.
Florida struck first in the 52nd minute when Madison Jones buried a shot from the top of the box to give the Gators a 1-0 lead. But Georgia State responded quickly. In the 61st minute, freshman defender Lily Sawyer rose highest on a cross and headed home a service from Carys Fraser, with Sunniyah Tucker also credited with an assist, to bring the match level at 1-1.
Just three minutes later, the Panthers surged ahead. Senior forward Reese Gordon capitalized on a feed from Aaliyah Faddoul, calmly finishing past the Florida keeper in the 64th minute to make it 2-1. The goal marked Gordon's third of the season and ultimately stood as the match-winner.
From there, Georgia State's defense and goalkeeper Ariana Anderson held firm. Florida pressed with 14 corner kicks and 18 total shots, but Anderson delivered six saves, including several key stops late, to secure the upset.
The Panthers managed just five total shots in the match but converted efficiently, putting four of them on frame and scoring twice. Faddoul led the way with two shots on target.
The win was Georgia State's first over Florida in program history and its first against any SEC opponent since defeating Mississippi State in 2005. It also moved the Panthers to 4-3 on the season.
Georgia State will look to build on the result when it travels to Spartanburg, S.C., to take on Wofford on Thursday, Sept. 11, at 7:00 p.m.
