HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Georgia State women's soccer nearly completed a late comeback but ultimately fell 3-2 on the road to Marshall on Sunday afternoon at Hoops Family Field.
The Panthers played nearly the entire match with a player advantage after Marshall goalkeeper Emma Durand was shown a red card in the 14th minute. Despite the numerical edge, Marshall struck first in the 28th minute when Bailey Fisher converted a penalty kick to give the Herd a 1-0 lead.
The hosts doubled their advantage in the 54th minute as Brooklyn McComas scored off assists from Kajsa Ekstrom and Luiza Travassos, putting Georgia State in a 2-0 hole.
The Panthers answered quickly. Just two minutes later, junior Gabriela Gonzalez calmly converted a penalty kick in the 56th minute, her first goal of the season, to cut the deficit to 2-1.
Marshall responded again in the 62nd minute when Fernanda Dantas finished from close range to make it 3-1. But Georgia State continued to battle, pulling back within one in the 84th minute. Junior Hina Suzuki slotted home her sixth goal of the year off a setup from Cadence Setzer, giving the Panthers hope of a late equalizer.
Despite sustained pressure in the closing minutes, including three shots from Suzuki and two from Emily Glenn, Marshall held on to secure the 3-2 win.
Georgia State finished with a 17-11 edge in total shots and an 8-6 advantage in shots on goal. Aaliyah Faddoul paced the attack with six attempts, three on target, while Suzuki tallied five shots and Gonzalez added a goal.
Goalkeeper Ariana Anderson recorded three saves for the Panthers, who fell to 6-4-1 overall and 2-1 in Sun Belt play.
Georgia State will now turn its attention to a road trip at Texas State on Saturday, Sept. 27, with kickoff set for 8 p.m. ET in San Marcos.
