HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - For the second year in a row, the Sandy Panthers have advanced to the Sun Belt Conference Championships title game. GSU will look to defend their 2023 title starting Saturday, April 27th at 2:00 p.m. ET. Georgia State will face the winner of Coastal Carolina versus UNCW/ULM, which occurs Saturday morning.
After going undefeated against conference opponents in the regular season, GSU has continued their SBC success. In the opening round of action on Thursday, No. 1 seeded GSU faced Stephen F. Austin, recording a 5-0 win over the Lumberjacks. Remaining in the winners bracket, the Sandy Panthers next faced in-state rival, Mercer. The Panthers secured their spot in the semifinal with a 4-1 victory over the Bears.
In Friday afternoon's semifinal contest against No. 3 seed Coastal Carolina, Georgia State found wins on courts 1, 2, and 4 en route to a 3-2 victory over CCU. On the top court,
Angel Ferary and
Bella Ferary defeated their opponents by a score of 16-21, 21-15, 15-13. This marks
Angel Ferary's 100th career victory in blue and white.
Tomorrow's championship match marks the third consecutive conference finals appearance for Van Fleet's squad. In 2022 GSU earned the C-USA title with a 3-0 victory over FIU. Last season, the Sandy Panthers earned the inaugural Sun Belt title with a 3-0 victory over Coastal Carolina. With conference champions earning an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, the Sandy Panthers will be fighting for their third straight national championship appearance and fifth in program history. The 2022 team made a historic run in the national tournament, defeating No. 7 Grand Canyon and No. 2 TCU. Last year's squad, fell to eventual national champion, USC, in the opening round.
