Georgia State Falls to Southern Miss

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Georgia State softball team fell short at Southern Miss after suffering three loses (5-0, 3-0, 4-1) in Hattiesburg, Miss. on Friday-Sunday. 

GAME THREE | Georgia State 1, Southern Miss 4
The Georgia State Panthers put together a valiant effort on Sunday, but ultimately came up short, falling to the Southern Miss Eagles by the score of 4-1.

Freshman Makayla Stephens (2-7) started and took the loss in the circle for Georgia State (10-31, ). Junior Sydney Boulware was a bright spot out of the bullpen, going 1.2 shutout innings while allowing one hit, walking one and striking out one.

At the plate, the Panthers were paced by freshman Lauren Brister, who went 2-for-2 on the day with a walk. Sophomore Ashton Schroyer compiled a noteworthy performance at the dish as well, going 2-for-3.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Trailing 2-0, the Panthers first put runs on the board in the fourth inning. Schroyer came across to score the lone run of the inning for Georgia State and get them on the board. The Panthers were unable to get any closer, as Southern Miss added two runs to their tally on the way to a 4-1 final.

GAME TWO | Georgia State 0, Southern Miss 3

The Georgia State Panthers were not able to record a run against Southern Miss pitcher junior Holly Craft on Saturday and were shut out 3-0 by the Eagles.

Junior Sydney Boulware (5-12) got the ball to start for Georgia State (10-30, ) and took the loss. The right-hander went six innings, giving up three runs, one earned, on eight hits, allowing three walks and striking out two.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Georgia State managed zero chances with runners on third in the shutout, going a total of 1-for-6 with runners in scoring position. The Panthers last got a runner on third in the fifth, when freshman Bella Morton made it 60 feet away from scoring with two outs.

The Georgia State Panthers were not able to notch a run against Southern Miss pitcher freshman Jana Lee on Friday despite recording six hits and were shut out 6-0 by the Eagles.

Freshman Makayla Stephens (2-7) started and took the loss in the circle for Georgia State (10-29).

HOW IT HAPPENED

Georgia State did not advance a runner past second base in the game. The Panthers went 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position, last placing a runner as far as second in the sixth, when senior Chloe Nadler made it into scoring position with two outs.

GAME NOTES

» The Panthers out-hit the Eagles at a 6-5 clip.
» Georgia State pitchers faced 27 Southern Miss hitters in the game, allowing six ground balls and nine fly balls while striking out three.
» Nadler led the Panthers at the plate, going 2-for-2.
» Southern Miss was led offensively by Lee, who went 1-for-2 with a home run and two RBI.

The Panthers return home for a week full of softball, starting with Georgia Tech and Kennesaw before returning to conference play against South Alabama on April 19-21.
