ATLANTA - Georgia State men's tennis (5-5) hosted UAB, North Florida, and Liberty in a three-day home series on Friday-Sunday.
The Panthers took one of the three matches, downing North Florida 4-3. Despite losses against UAB and Liberty, the weekend was highlighted by a strong singles performance from newcomer
Maxwell Weir.Â
GSU vs. UABÂ
The Panthers fought through close doubles matches, but fell short on courts No. 1 and No. 3 to give UAB the 1-0 lead.Â
Despite close matches in singles play, the Panthers dropped points on courts No. 2, No. 5, and No. 6, and UAB clinched 4-0.
Edward Tymes went unfinished in his match on court No. 3 after going 2-6 and 5-3 in his matched. Both
Diogo Morais and
Baran Soyler battled in third sets when UAB clinched the match.Â
GSU vs North Florida
The Panthers started off with a victory on doubles court No. 3 as
Naufal Kamaruzzaman and Weir defeated their opponents 6-4. Georgia State dropped matches on doubles courts No. 1 and No. 2, entering singles with a 1-0 disadvantage.Â
Georgia State saw strong performances throughout singles play, taking four out of six singles matches. Sophomore Gabriel Datei competed on singles court No. 2, posting a 6-1 and 6-4 decision. On courts No. 4, No. 5, and No. 6, Morais, Kamaruzzaman, and Weir all fought through three-setters resulting in victories for the Panthers. With victories on four singles courts, the Panthers clinched the match to defeat North Florida 4-3.Â
GSU vs LibertyÂ
Georgia State played its last match of the weekend at home against Liberty on Sunday. After losing the doubles point, the Panthers entered singles play 1-0 down.
Soyler posted a strong win at the top singles court with a quick 6-1 and 6-3 victory. On singles court No. 4, Weir earned his second singles win of the weekend, taking down his opponent 6-1 and 7-5. Despite the success from these newcomers, the Panthers dropped singles matches on all remaining courts, giving Liberty the win.Â
The Panthers travel to Tallahassee on Feb. 23 for a Friday evening match against Florida State. Following the matchup with Florida State, the Panthers travel back home to compete against UNC Wilmington on Sunday Feb. 25 at 12 p.m.Â
