ATLANTA - The Georgia State men's tennis team secured a 6-1 victory over Stetson (1-2) at home to move on to 4-0 on the season for the first time since 2002.
Gabriel Datei clinched the match point for the Panthers with a 6-3, 6-3 victory at the No. 2 court.
The Panthers saw success on doubles courts No. 1 and No. 3, leading them to take the early lead in the match. Sophomore pair Datei and
Baran Soyler defeated their opponents 6-4 at the top court, as their teammates
Diogo Morais and
Edward Tymes also overcame their opponents 6-4 at the No. 3 court.
Maxwell Weir saw success on the sixth singles flight with a quick 6-1, 6-4 decision, giving GSU a 2-0 advantage for the match. Coming off Sun Belt Player of the Week honors, Soyler followed up the win with a strong 6-2, 6-4 win at the top singles flight. Soyler remains undefeated in singles play on the season.
Datei earned the clinching point for the Panthers, defeating his opponent 6-3, 6-3 at the No. 2 court. The win on court two lead Datei to his second singles win of the season. Morais notched his first victory of the season with a 7-5, 6-3 decision on court No. 4.
At the No. 3 court, Tymes defeated his opponent with a close 6-4, 5-7, 10-8 win. Tymes was down 3-7 in the super-tie-breaker, but fought hard to come back and win the match, giving the Panthers their sixth point.
The Panthers come off two successful weekends, moving on to 4-0 on the season for the first time since 2002. Georgia State men's tennis will be back in action Friday, Feb. 2 at Georgia Tech.
