Women's Soccer Announces 2023 Schedule

ATLANTA— Highlighted by 10 matchups facing Sun Belt Conference opponents and non-conference battles against Ole Miss, Murray State, Kennesaw State and Mercer, Georgia State women's soccer announced its 2023 fall schedule on Monday. Head Coach Ed Joyce and the Panthers prepare to open the season having posted a successful 2022 campaign that saw the team advance to the SBC Semifinals for a fifth consecutive season.

Serving as team captain for the Panthers a season ago, Spain native and defender Eva Diez Lois will enter a fifth year competing with GSU. The All-Sun Belt Second-Team selection for 2022 helped lead the Panthers' defense to nine shutouts for the fall and reached the 5000 career-minutes mark after playing and starting in 20 outings on the year.

The Panthers' top-scorer in 2022, senior midfielder Elena Diaz enters a second year competing with GSU after joining the team's roster a season ago as a transfer from Daytona State. Charting five goals off a total of 25 shots with 13 shots on goal, the Spanish native joins senior forward Callee Maughon as the only other Panthers' returner to play and start in all 21 matches on the year.

GSU will begin 2023 play with a pair of exhibition matches facing Clayton State and Chattanooga on Thursday, Aug. 10 and Sunday, Aug. 13. The Panthers' battled both teams for regular-season competition in 2022, posting a 3-0 win over Clayton State to open the season and a 1-1 draw against Chattanooga two matches later.

The Panthers open the 2023 regular season hosting South Carolina State on Thursday, Aug. 17 at the GSU Soccer Complex. The upcoming fall marks a third season the Panthers will play host to opponents at the soccer facility in downtown Atlanta.

GSU will enter a stretch of three additional home outings facing Murray State, Mercer and Presbyterian before traveling for the team's first road matchup against Western Carolina on Thursday, Aug. 31. The Panthers will then return home to Atlanta and prepare to host SEC opponent Ole Miss on Sunday, Sept. 3.

The team makes a return trip to Kennesaw State on Thursday, Sept. 7, then closes non-conference play in a road matchup with Alabama State. GSU previously battled Kennesaw State to a 2-2 draw in 2022.

The Panthers open Sun Belt Conference play on the road with a rivalry matchup against Georgia Southern in Statesboro. After falling short in a narrow 0-1 loss at home facing the Eagles, GSU saw a rematch with Georgia Southern in the SBC quarterfinals and defeated the in-state foe, 1-0, to advance in conference tournament play.

GSU will host SBC opponents Coastal Carolina, Texas State, Arkansas State, James Madison and Appalachian State at home in 2023, and will travel for additional road outings facing ULM, Southern Miss, Marshall and Old Dominion.

The Sun Belt Conference Championship will be held in Foley, Ala. from Oct. 29-Nov. 5.
