No. 14 Sandy Panthers Secure Back-to-Back Shutouts to Advance at SBC Championship

HUNTSVILLE, Ala.— No. 14-ranked Georgia State beach volleyball opened the first day of competition at the Sun Belt Conference Championship at the John Hunt Park Sand Volleyball Complex in Huntsville, Ala. on Thursday and posted consecutive 3-0 shutouts with victories in straight sets at every court over No. 8-seeded Stephen F. Austin and No. 5-seeded ULM. Second-flight pair Yasmin Kuck and Lila Bordis along with fourth-flight pair Maddy Delmonte and Ayla Johnson charted wins in each match and helped the team advance to the second day of the double-elimination tournament.

The top-seeded Sandy Panthers entered play at the SBC tournament on Thursday morning with a matchup against Stephen F. Austin. GSU saw a swift 3-0 victory over the No. 8 seed as Kelly Dorn and Elise Saga paired for a 21-12, 21-19 straight-set win at the third flight to earn the team its first point for the dual.

Kuck and Bordis earned GSU its second point with a 21-11, 21-14 win at the third flight. Delmonte and Johnson secured match point for the Sandy Panthers with a 21-12, 21-13 win at the fourth flight, and GSU would advance in the tournament.

The second match of the day would see No. 1-seeded GSU pitted against No. 5 seed ULM. The Sandy Panthers once again charted a dominant 3-0 victory over the foe, as Destiny White and Aliisa Vuorinen notched a 21-10, 21-12 win at the fifth court to secure the team its first point.

Delmonte and Johnson downed foes at the fourth flight to earn a second point for GSU, while Bordis and Kuck would secure the shutout for the Sandy Panthers with a 21-14, 21-19 victory at the second flight.

Top-seeded GSU returns for the second day of SBC tournament play on Friday, beginning with a matchup against No. 3 seed Coastal Carolina slated for 4 p.m. ET. The Sandy Panthers previously saw competition against the Sandy Chants on March 8, as the team hosted the conference foe in Atlanta and defeated Coastal Carolina, 4-1.

The team's dual match facing Coastal Carolina will be contested at the John Hunt Park Sand Volleyball Complex in Huntsville, Ala. and streamed live on ESPN+. Live stats will be provided by Rally Volleyball.
