Panthers Split Weekend as Paredes Clinches Facing Arkansas State

JONESBORO, Ark.— Georgia State women's tennis secured a 4-3 victory on the road facing Sun Belt Conference opponent Arkansas State on Sunday to post a split in competition over the weekend. After falling short of a win visiting conference foe ULM on Friday, the Panthers returned to road play with the outing against the Red Wolves and saw wins at all four active singles courts highlighted by freshman Maria Paredes' three-set match-clincher at the top court.

GSU accounted for straight-set victories at three of four singles courts on Sunday after falling behind 0-3 for the match following a loss in doubles. The shorthanded Panthers' roster would once again be forced to default at courts No. 5 and No. 6 entering singles before rallying for wins at every court.

Pragnya Kumar notched a strong 6-0, 6-3 win at the fourth court to earn GSU its first point in the match. Michelle Ncube followed up the win with a 6-2, 6-3 victory in straight sets at the second court, bringing the overall count to 3-2.

Alvarez would even the match with a 6-4, 6-3 win at the third singles court. With the score deadlocked at 3-3, Paredes rallied back down a set and charted a 2-6, 7-6, 6-1 victory at the top court to clinch match point for the Panthers and secure the 4-3 team victory.

Friday saw GSU come up short in a narrow doubles outing to open competition versus ULM. The Panthers dropped matches at singles courts No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 and were defeated, 6-1.

Paredes posted a 6-3, 6-3 straight-set victory at the top singles court to earn the team its only point of the match. The freshman accounted for back-to-back singles wins over the weekend competing at the first court in each match.

The Panthers currently stand at 2-16 overall with a 2-7 mark for SBC play following the split.

GSU travels south to Statesboro on Saturday, April 22 for a meeting with in-state conference rival Georgia Southern. Match time is slated for 10 a.m. ET with further information on the matchup to be released later in the week.

Originally set for March 12 in Mobile but postponed to a later date due to rain, the Panthers' match facing conference rival South Alabama will now be contested in Atlanta on Sunday, April 23 with an 11 a.m. ET start time.
