Datei Clinches Conference Victory Over Cajuns

ATLANTA— Georgia State men's tennis (6-15) posted a 4-3 decision over Sun Belt Conference opponent Louisiana on Saturday as freshman Gabriele Datei secured match point for the Panthers with a three-set thriller at the top court. Tied 3-3 for the match, Datei battled to three sets at No. 1 singles and downed the first-court foe for the Rajin' Cajuns with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 victory.

Saturday's outing in Atlanta would see the Panthers rally from behind to reclaim a tie on three separate occasions. 2-0 down for the match after falling short in doubles and dropping at singles No. 6, Diogo Morais charted a 6-0, 6-4 win at singles court No. 4 to earn GSU its first point of the match.

Edward Tymes saw a 6-3, 6-3 victory at the fifth singles court to earn the Panthers a second point and even the match at 2-2. Down 3-2 after dropping at the fourth court, GSU once again evened the count at 3-3 with a three-set victory from fifth-year senior Roberts Grinvalds at the second singles court.

Datei's match-clinching win at the top singles court secured the 4-3 victory in the Panthers' favor and helped the team notch its third conference victory for the spring.

The Panthers improve to 6-15 overall with a 3-4 mark for conference play following the win. Men's tennis will close regular-season competition on Sunday with its final home outing facing SBC foe Southern Miss.

Sunday's battle against the Sun Belt newcomer will serve as Senior Day, as the team honors seniors Roberts Grinvalds and Diego Padilha. Match time is slated for 1 p.m. ET at the GSU Clarkston Courts, with a Senior Day ceremony set to take place prior to the match.
