ATLANTA -- Georgia State's No. 10-ranked beach volleyball team won two matches at the 2023 Day of Duals, including a victory over No. 20 Coastal Carolina on Tuesday at the GSU Beach Volleyball Complex. Head coach Beth Van Fleet and the Sandy Panthers wrap the team's third dual match tournament outing currently unbeaten in Sun Belt Conference play and touting a 3-0 mark for the league's inaugural season of beach volleyball.
The Sandy Panthers (8-3) began the day with a 4-1 win over the No. 20-ranked Sandy Chants and ended it with a 5-0 victory over Mercer, both Sun Belt Conference foes. In between, Georgia State fell to No. 4 Florida State, 5-0.
Sophomores Angel Ferary and Bella Ferary played the No. 1 flight in all three matches, and picked up straight set victories over CCU and Mercer. The sisters have now charted seven dual match victories for GSU this spring.
Destiny White and Aliisa Vuorinen notched a pair of victories in straight sets against both SBC opponents CCU and Mercer. The fifth-flight pair was named Sun Belt Conference Pair of the Week on Wednesday after a 3-1 performance last week at the Tampa Invitational that included wins over two nationally ranked opponents in No. 6 Grand Canyon and No. 11 Stetson.
Elise Saga and Kelly Dorn teamed at the second flight, while Yasmin Kuck and Lila Bordis played the third flight as each pair notched a 2-1 record on the day. Maddy Delmonte and Ayla Johnson earned a one-sided victory in straight sets at the No. 4 flight facing Mercer.
GSU improves to eight wins for 2023 as Van Fleet continues to near the 200 win mark as a coach. With the pair of victories on Wednesday, the Sandy Panthers' head coach has now accounted for 196 total wins and ranks third place among active NCAA beach coaches with 164 NCAA victories.
Georgia State's next event is the March to May, March 17-19 at Gulf Shores, Ala. The Sandy Panthers will host another home event on the GSU campus with the GSU Diggin' Duals slated for April 7-8.
