ATLANTA - Georgia State (4-10) fell to Northern Iowa (2-6) and Tennessee State (8-3) on the first day of the Panther Invitational.
Game 1: UNI 9 – GSU 0
Northern Iowa came in swinging and by the third inning it was 8-0.
Georgia State struggled in the box having the chance to score in the bottom of the second with bases loaded due to walks but could not deliver.
Northern Iowa scored one more run to seal the deal on an error and Georgia State would fall to Northern Iowa in 5 innings.
Samantha Heyer (1-4) pitched a no hitter and earned her first win.
Emily Hodnett (3-5) would take the loss for Georgia State.
Game 2: TSU 5 – GSU 2
Despite the previous game ending an hour early, first pitch was thrown two hours later due to a rain delay.
Emily Brown scored two runs on three hits with four at bats, leading off the Panthers in the first inning with a single and a run scored. She would score again in the third inning beating out a bunt and scoring on throwing errors.
The Tigers answered with two hits and a run scored in the 2
nd to tie up the game. Then took the lead in the 5
th with back-to-back doubles. They then scored two more runs in the bottom of the seventh.
The Panthers tried to make a comeback as Brown doubled to left field but she was left on base with the third out.
Freshman
Maia Mumpfield got her first start in the circle and started with a pick off at third and a strikeout.
Emily Hodnett (3-6) will take the loss after relieving Mumpfield in the second inning, up by one. Hodnett pitched six innings and dished out six strikeouts, only walking three and letting in four runs.
The Panther Invitational will continue tomorrow, Saturday, February 25 at 10:00 a.m. Your Panthers will be back in action at 3:00 PM as they take on the Western Carolina Catamounts.
