MIAMI -
Emma Yanes tallied her first collegiate hit and
Hallie Adams and
Elle Doolittle tossed a combined shutout as Georgia State topped Kansas City 5-0 in their final game of the Felsburg Invitational at FIU on Sunday morning.
With the win, Georgia State improved to 1-4 and finished third in the Felsburg Invitational. They will face Georgia Tech in their home opener at Bob Heck Field on Tuesday, Feb. 14 at 5 p.m.
Making her second career start, Yanes went 2-for-3 and drove in two RBI's with a stolen base. The sophomore from Woodstock earned her first hit and stolen base in the second inning, and her two RBI's in the sixth provided GSU with crucial insurance to pull away late.
Carolyn Deady went 1-for-2 with a walk, and
Maia Mumpfield and
Jaycee Goodwin both went 1-for-3 with Mumpfield driving in two runs. Goodwin has recorded a hit in each of her four starts and is batting .545 on the season.
Adams got the start for GSU and pitched two scoreless innings before giving way to Doolittle (1-0), who finished the game with five scoreless frames to record her first collegiate victory. Her five innings equals her career-high set against Troy on March 20 and Louisiana on April 2 in 2021.
GSU jumped out to a quick lead early and never looked back.
Emily Brown led off the first inning with an infield single and stole second before scoring on a base hit and subsequent rundown by
Ashton Schroyer to put the Panthers up 1-0.
The score remained that way until the sixth as
Jaycee Goodwin singled and
Bailee Richardson and
Carolyn Deady loaded the bases with two outs. Yanes came to the plate and laced a two-run double to left field, and then Mumpfield drove two more runs home with a single to right center to put Georgia State up 5-0.
Kansas City's best scoring chance came in the fifth when the loaded the bases on two hits, but Doolittle induced a flyout to right field to get out of the jam and preserve the shutout.
Sydney Nichols and Lexy Smith led UMKC (1-4) two hits each, and Roos starter Jenna Milan (0-2) pitched all seven innings and absorbed the loss.
