MIAMI – Georgia State dropped both games of their doubleheader 6-1 against UMKC and 11-2 versus Clemson at the Felsburg Invitational at FIU to open the 2023 season on Friday afternoon.
Jaycee Goodwin went 3-for-3 and drove in both GSU runs to lead all batters in Game Two.
Emily Brown recorded a hit in both games.
Jackie Gonzalez delivered GSU's first hit of the season in Game One, and freshman
Ashton Schroyer went 1-for-2 with one RBI in her collegiate debut.
Game One: UMKC 6, GSU 1
Georgia State had an opportunity to strike early in Game One, putting runners in scoring position in each the first three innings but couldn't capitalize.
UMKC jumped out front 2-0 on a pair of two out doubles in the bottom of the third and then scored two more runs in the fourth on two bases-loaded walks.
GSU fought back in the fifth as
Emily Brown delivered an infield single to leadoff the inning and scored on
Ashton Schroyer's double to pull the Panthers within three, but a double-play and a strikeout ended the rally.
Camryn Stickel (1-0) pitched all seven innings to earn the complete-game victory for UMKC. Panther starter
Emily Hodnett (0-1) took the loss.
Game Two: Clemson 11, GSU 2
After Clemson raced out to an early 3-0 lead with two home runs in the top of the first, GSU responded with two runs in the home half.
Emily Brown legged out an infield single to leadoff the game, and
Ashton Schroyer reached on an error that advanced her to second and Brown to third. Then after a strikeout,
Bailee Richardson reached on a fielder's choice but Brown was tagged out at the plate. Richardson then stole second and
Jaycee Goodwin delivered the first of her three hits to bring both runs home.
That was all the Panthers would manage as the Tigers pulled away with eight runs over the next six innings.
Georgia State continue the Felsburg Invitational on Saturday against host FIU at 12:30 p.m.
