Women's Tennis Drops Pair of Road Matches Against Lipscomb, Middle Tennessee

Murfreesboro, Tenn.— In the team's second week of spring 2023 competition, Georgia State women's tennis fell short in back-to-back matches on the road facing Lipscomb and Middle Tennessee on Friday and Saturday. Head coach LeTrone Mason and the Panthers entered each match playing shorthanded with only two doubles pairs and playing only five of the six singles court positions.

GSU began the weekend visiting Lipscomb in Nashville and was forced to default at the No. 3 doubles court as well as the No. 6 singles court due to the limited roster. The Panthers started the match 0-1, down, due to the default.

With the loss by default at No. 3 doubles, the Panthers fought at the first and second doubles courts and secured a win, 6-4, at the top court. Despite a tight battle at the second position, GSU ultimately dropped by a narrow margin, 5-7, as Lipscomb earned the early point in doubles and a 2-0 lead entering singles.

After a loss at the top court that gave Lipscomb an additional team point, senior Alexia Alvarez secured a victory at singles court No. 5 with a win, 6-4, 6-4, earning GSU its first point of the match. All five singles courts saw close matches for the Panthers, but Lipscomb ultimately clinched the match with a win in three sets at court No. 2.

Playing out the Friday night outing, the Panthers earned a second point with a three-set win, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1, by Maria Paredes at singles court No. 4. The match ended by a final count of 5-2 and GSU fell to 0-2 on the season.

GSU returned to play on Saturday battling Middle Tennessee in Murfreesboro. Down, 0-1, due to the default at singles No. 6, Michelle Ncube and Maria Paredes partnered at the second doubles court leading, 5-3, before ending the match UF as Middle Tennessee secured a win at the top doubles court.

Entering singles play 0-2, down, and playing clinch, GSU dropped at singles courts No. 5 and No. 4 and Middle Tennessee secured the win in its favor, 4-0. Paredes went UF at No. 3 singles leading, 6-4, 4-3, and Ncube played a third set at the second court before also ending the match UF.

Eva Chivu led in a second set at the top court looking to force a third set. The Panthers fall to 0-3 following the pair of losses.

GSU returns to Atlanta next weekend and will host Mercer for its home opener on Saturday, Feb. 4 with match time set for 2 p.m. ET. More information regarding live stats and streaming will be announced later in the week on the team's social media and on the web.
