Vercammen, Maughon Connect in Panthers' Draw with Mercer

Macon, Ga.— Closing the weekend with a second consecutive road match, Georgia State women's soccer played Mercer to a draw, 2-2, on Sunday as Josepha Vercammen and Callee Maughon connected on goals for the Panthers in the 35th and 53rd minutes. GSU wraps non-conference competition for the season with the tie facing the Bears and prepares to enter Sun Belt Conference play next week.

The Panthers' match in Macon saw Mercer strike first early in the sixth minute to take a 1-0 lead. Out-charting the Bears in shots throughout the first period, GSU was finally able to find the back of the net with freshman forward Vercammen scoring off an assist from sophomore teammate Bree Barley in the 35th minute.

Despite the equalizer marking the first goal of the season for Vercammen, the freshman striker has accounted for a team-high 22 shots with 11 shots on goal. Vercammen charted a total of three shots with two shots on goal in the Panthers' draw on Sunday.

Returning to action after the half with the score even at 1-1, Maughon's goal in the 53rd minute gave GSU a 2-1 advantage. The goal served as the junior forward's first of the year.

Mercer was awarded a penalty kick following a foul on GSU in the 83rd minute. The Bears capitalized on the opportunity and managed to equalize before the teams ended the match in a tie, 2-2.

GSU finished the match with 17 total shots and nine shots on goal. Goalkeeper Jaddah Foos recorded six saves for the Panthers.

Charting 180 minutes in the Panthers' matches this week, Kamree Holloway has now recorded over 5000 minutes played throughout the senior's tenure with GSU. The defender has charted 90 minutes in every match for the Panthers this season.

GSU moves to 4-1-3 overall for the season following the draw and will open conference competition next week. The Panthers travel to Mobile, Ala. for a match against Sun Belt foe South Alabama next Sunday, Sept. 18 at 1 p.m. ET.

The team will return home on Wednesday, Sept. 21 to host Louisiana at the GSU Soccer Complex. The match in Atlanta is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET.

Both matches will be broadcast on ESPN+ with live stats available to fans. For continued updates on the Panthers' 2022 season, follow the Georgia State women's soccer team on Twitter (@GSUWomensSoccer) and Instagram (@GSU_Soccer) as the team begins its conference campaign.
