No. 10 Seed Panthers Down Grand Canyon, 3-2, Advance to Second Round of NCAA Championship

Gulf Shores, Ala.– Entering first-round competition at the NCAA National Collegiate Beach Volleyball Championship in Gulf Shores, the No. 10 seed Georgia State beach volleyball team defeated No. 7 seed Grand Canyon, 3-2, to advance to the second round of tournament play. With fifth-year senior Eden Hawes and senior Maddy Delmonte clinching for the Panthers at the third flight in three sets, GSU moves on and will battle No. 2 seed TCU on Friday, May 6 at noon ET.

GSU faced GCU in a rematch having fallen to the foe, 4-1, in Gulf Shores earlier in the year. Dual match play saw GSU drop first sets at four of five courts before rallying for three-set wins at courts No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 to secure the victory.

Playing in its second NCAA Championship and third national championship tournament, head coach Beth Van Fleet's squad earned the first NCAA victory in program history.

The Panthers fell behind, 1-0, as the team dropped at the top court.

Angel Ferary and Bella Ferary evened the count for GSU with a win, 21-15, 19-21, 15-5, at the forth flight. The pair extends its school-record 35-2 mark for the season, and each sister earns a new school record for individual wins in a season at 35-2.

After dropping the first set at the third flight, Yasmin Kuck and Kayla Whetstone won in back-to-back sets and earned the Panthers a second point with a win, 10-21, 21-18, 15-11.

GSU dropped at the fifth court as the dual match score was evened again, 2-2. With the match to be decided by a thrilling three-set battle at the third court, Hawes and Delmonte downed opponents, 13-21, 21-17, 15-14, and secured the first-round victory for GSU.

The Panthers move to the second round of NCAA tournament play and are set to face No. 2-seeded TCU in Gulf Shores on Friday at noon ET. With a double elimination format for the remainder of competition, the winner of Friday's match will play the winner of No. 3 seed UCLA versus No. 6 seed LSU on Friday at 5 p.m. ET.

The loser of each match will face off on Friday at 3 p.m. ET in hopes of extending play to the third day of competition on Saturday.

Matches will be held at Gulf Place Beach and will be broadcast on ESPNU. Streaming links will be posted on the Panthers's schedule page and to the team's social media pages leading up to Friday's second round of tournament action.
