Panthers Secure Three Victories in Second Weekend of Tournament Play

FORT WORTH, TEXAS- In a weekend that saw the Panthers compete in five matches over the span of two days, the Georgia State beach volleyball team posted a 3-2 record at the Horned Frog Challenge as GSU wrapped up the second day of tournament action with victories over No. 18 South Carolina and Central Arkansas on Saturday.

Hosted by TCU at the TCU Beach Volleyball Courts in Fort Worth, the field of competition included a total of five ranked teams. GSU's win against South Carolina marked the first match of the day as the Panthers rolled to a 4-1 victory. The team's next match against host TCU saw the Panthers fall short of a victory, 4-1.

In a quick turnaround, GSU geared up to face Central Arkansas for the final outing of the weekend. Posting a resounding 5-0 shutout, the team closed out the weekend in Texas with a win and moved to 5-4 on the season.

Now 8-1 in match play this season, sisters Angel Ferary and Bella Ferary finished the weekend with a 4-1 record. The Ferary's impressive play in the fourth and fifth flights was capped off with a dominant win over UCA, 21-13, 21-10. The duo's only defeat came against fifth ranked TCU in three sets.

Senior Kelly Dorn and junior Elise Saga posted strong performances in the top flight for the Panthers all weekend as the pair finished the day 2-1. This included victories over South Carolina, 21-11, 21-18, as well as UCA, 21-15, 21-19.

Yasmin Kuck and Kayla Whetstone partnered in the second flight on Saturday as the pair finished the day unbeaten at 3-0. Kuck and Whetstone accounted for GSU's only win in its match against TCU as the pair knocked off opponents on court No. 2, 21-15, 21-15 and finished 4-1 on the weekend.

Returning to competition as a pair over the weekend, fifth year Eden Hawes and senior Maddy Delmonte finished 2-1 on Saturday with strong wins over South Carolina, 21-11, 21-15, and UCA, 21-15, 21-17. Hawes and Delmonte were both named to the Preseason All-Conference USA team entering spring 2022. The duo has partnered together in all but three matches in each of GSU's previous two seasons.

The Panthers will have a short break before returning home to host the annual Day of Duals at the GSU Beach Volleyball Complex on Wednesday, March 9. Matches will include meetings with Coastal Carolina at 8 a.m. ET followed by Tusculum at 4 p.m. ET. The Panthers will wrap up the mid-week tournament with a matchup against in-state foe Mercer at 6 p.m. ET.
