Panthers Split in First Day of Competition at Horned Frog Challenge

FORT WORTH, TEXAS- With matchups against No. 16 Stetson and No. 3 Florida State, Georgia State beach volleyball finished 1-1 in match play as the Panthers concluded day one of competition at the Horned Frog Challenge on Friday. GSU posted a win over Stetson, 3-2, and followed up the victory with a loss to FSU, 4-1.

Even at 2-2, the Panthers secured a win over Stetson in the first of Friday's duo of outings as top pair Kelly Dorn and Elise Saga claimed a victory in straight sets, 22-20, 21-18, and clinched the final point for GSU. Yasmin Kuck and Kayla Whetstone also saw victory, 21-14, 21-16, in the third flight and sisters Angel Ferary and Bella Ferary won, 21-16, 21-17, in the sixth flight.

Despite strong efforts across the team's lineup, Friday's second match saw GSU fall short of a victory in a battle against third-ranked FSU. The Panthers managed to secure a point in the fourth court position as the Ferary sisters posted a win in three sets, 15-21, 22-20, 13-15. The pair remains unbeaten on the season at 6-0. Yasmin Kuck and Kayla Whetstone played to extra sets on court No. 2 but came up shy of a victory as the pair was defeated, 21-18, 23-21.

Moving to 3-3 on the spring with the split in Friday's competition, GSU will look to improve on the record as the team returns to action on Saturday for day two of the Horned Frog Challenge. The second day will see a trio of matches including outings against South Carolina at 8:30 a.m. ET and host TCU at 12:30 p.m. ET. The Panther's final match will be against Central Arkansas at 2:30 p.m. ET to wrap up the second weekend of tournament play and close out the team's road trip to Texas.
