Panthers Drop Matches Facing FIU, FAU in First Day at Stetson Beach Bash

DeLand, Fla.- The Georgia State beach volleyball team closed out the first day of tournament competition at the Stetson Beach Bash with losses facing Conference USA opponents No. 19 FIU and No. 10 FAU on Saturday.

No. 13 GSU finished 2-3 in tournament competition in Gulf Shores, Ala. last week with matches against four nationally ranked opponents. The road trip was highlighted by a matchup with No. 1 UCLA that saw the Panthers narrowly defeated, 3-2.

Entering the midway point of the season with the tournament in Florida, the Panthers opened the weekend with a matchup against nineteenth ranked FIU.

GSU gained a early point and the lead with a victory, 21-14, 21-17, by sisters Angel Ferary and Bella Ferary in the team's fourth flight. After dropping courts No. 5 and No. 1, the Panthers evened the match at 2-2 with a win from No. 3 pair Eden Hawes and Maddy Delmonte, 21-15, 21-11.

With the match to be decided on court No. 2, GSU fell short in a three set battle against the C-USA foe FIU, 3-2.

The second match of the day would see the Panthers face No. 10 FAU in an additional conference matchup. The dual marked the team's fourth outing facing a top 10 opponent in the past week.

The Ferary sisters once again made quick work of opponents in the No. 4 flight as the duo secured another strong win, 21-16, 21-17, and earned the Panthers the first point of the match. The win moves the pair to 2-0 on the weekend and improves the duo's overall record to 17-2 on the spring.

Despite hard fought battles across all flights, GSU dropped on courts No. 5, No. 1, No. 3 and No. 2 as the team closed out the first day of action in DeLand with a loss to FAU, 4-1. With the losses, the Panthers move to 10-9 on the season and 2-2 in matches facing conference opponents.

GSU resumes play for the second day of tournament competition on Sunday with rematches against C-USA foe Coastal Carolina at 8 a.m. ET and host Stetson at noon ET. Matches will be played at the Cooper Beach Courts.

Live scores will be provided for both duals and posted to the team's social media accounts prior to each match. Follow @GSUBeachVB on Twitter and Instagram for continued news and updates throughout the weekend.
